Harrison County officials are attributing a 911 dispatch mix-up to a computer error and miscommunication.

Firefighters responding to a house fire last week were sent to the wrong address about 20 miles away.

County administrator Willie Parker tells The Exponent Telegram that an investigation found the house’s location hadn’t been converted to a new address in the Harrison-Taylor 911 computer system. When a caller reported the fire, the computer system showed an old address.

Parker says there also was confusion between the dispatcher and the caller.

He says Harrison-Taylor 911 officials are checking all addresses in the system to make sure they are current.

The house was a total loss.

Two W.Va. Counties Designated Drug Trafficking Areas

The federal government will provide additional help to two West Virginia counties to reduce drug abuse and drug trafficking.

Berkeley and Harrison counties are among 26 counties and cities in 11 states designated as high intensity drug trafficking areas.

Office of National Drug Control Policy acting director Michael Botticelli announced the designations on Monday.

The designation increases the counties’ access to federal resources and information sharing among federal, state and local law enforcement.

Seventeen other West Virginia counties previously were designated as high intensity drug trafficking areas.

Antero Resources can resume operations at two drilling sites where water storage tanks ruptured recently.

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection has lifted orders requiring Antero to cease operations at the well pad sites in Doddridge and Harrison counties.

The DEP tells WBOY-TV that the company has submitted plans required to resume operations. The plans include controls to prevent pressure from building up in the tanks.

The DEP had said earlier that pressure buildup caused the tanks to rupture.

Two tanks ruptured at the Marsden Pad in Doddridge County on April 11. On April 15, two tanks ruptured at the Varner-West Pad in Harrison County.

The DEP says it will continue to monitor operations at both sites.

Coal Company Cited by MSHA for Coal Slurry Death

A coal company has been cited by federal mining regulators for the November 2012 collapse of a Harrison County coal slurry impoundment that left a miner dead.

Dozer operator Markel Koon of Shinnstown and his machine were swept into the impoundment when an embankment collapsed at the Robinson Run Mine’s Nolan Round impoundment near Lumberport. He was 58.

The Charleston Gazette reports that U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration investigators cited Consolidation Coal Co. for three alleged violations. The death occurred when the impoundment was operated by a subsidiary of Pittsburgh-based CONSOL Energy.

According to a report provided to family members on Wednesday, mine management tried to expand a coal-slurry impoundment faster than was considered safe, and continued the work despite warnings that the site was becoming unstable.

Harrison Co. Expected to Name Mark Manchin as Superintendent

West Virginia School Building Authority executive director Mark Manchin says he plans to step down to become Harrison County’s school superintendent.

The county Board of Education has scheduled a special meeting Wednesday to vote on a proposed contract. School board president David Sturm tells media outlets that he expects the board to approve the contract.

Manchin says he will accept the job if it’s offered.

Manchin has served as the SBA’s executive director since 2006. He previously served as the state-appointed superintendent of McDowell County Schools and as Webster County’s superintendent.

The Marion County native says the move would put him closer to his mother, who lives in Fairmont. An aunt and several cousins live in Harrison County.
