WVSU to Receive Teaching, Research Grants

West Virginia State University is receiving $1.8 million in federal grants to support teaching, research and extension activities.

The grants are part of 53 grants totaling more than $18 million announced Monday by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack for historically black land-grant colleges and universities.

West Virginia State in Institute will receive nearly $900,000 in grants for teaching, $300,000 for research and $600,000 for extension.

The Agriculture Department says in a news release that the university will focus on improving the health behaviors of grandparents who serve as primary caregivers for their grandchildren.

The grants are from the Agriculture Department’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

Three W.Va. Airports Received Grants for Improvements

Three airports in Southern West Virginia have been awarded federal grants to improve airfield infrastructure.
 
U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall says Greenbrier Valley Airport will receive $1 million to pay for the design of reconstructing apron pavement and building a new taxi lane. The airport also will use the funding to acquire snow removal equipment.
 
Logan County Airport will receive $150,000 to acquire a new runway visual guidance system.
 
The Federal Aviation Administration also awarded nearly $130,000 to Summersville Airport to remove trees and obstructions from one of its runway approaches and transitional surfaces.
 
 

Two W.Va. Medical Centers Receive Federal Grants

  Two medical centers in West Virginia have been awarded federal grants to improve services and continue operations.

Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center in Grantsville and Preston-Taylor Community Health Centers in Newburg each received more than $1 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Federal Assistance Management. 

U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller and U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin announced the Health Center Cluster grants on Monday.

The grant provides financial assistance to health care centers that serve rural or underserved areas.
