Listen

On this West Virginia Morning, Gov. Jim Justice has ordered the wearing of face masks inside public buildings in West Virginia. Also, in this show, a middle school on Charleston’s west side will change its name after the Kanawha County Board of Education voted unanimously to remove an association with Confederate General Stonewall Jackson, and we hear a story about modern dance from our Appalachia Folkways Project.

Citing a spike in the number of coronavirus cases, Gov. Justice has ordered masks to be worn in buildings outside of a resident’s home. Dave Mistich reports.

The Kanawha County Board of Education voted 5-0 to change the name of Stonewall Jackson Middle School at a special meeting on Monday. The move comes as governmental entities across the country are reexamining how history has honored Confederate leaders. Emily Allen has more.

There’s a modern dance company in southern West Virginia that focuses their dances on telling stories about Appalachian history, art and culture. Inside Appalachia Folkways reporter Jordan Lovejoy is a former dance student at the West Virginia Dance Company. In the latest episode of Inside Appalachia, Jordan sat down with her former teacher, to tell her story of bringing modern dance to the mountain state.
