The new fall season of Mountain Stage begins this Friday with the premiere broadcast of episode 1,013. Guest host Larry Groce welcomes Wilco back to the show for their fourth appearance since 1996, along with blues man Guy Davis, alt-folk singer and songwriter Peter Case, and Grammy Nominated songwriter and producer Garrison Starr. Thanks to our partners at WOUB Public Media and at Ohio University Arts, we had a sold-out crowd gathered at the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium in Athens, Ohio.
Our Song of the Week comes from pioneering alt-rock sextet, Wilco. Formed in the mid-’90s, the influential Chicago-based band evolved into the standard-bearers for experimental rock over the past two decades. With their 12th studio album Cruel Country, they lean back into their roots for what the band itself labels as a “country album,” with their innovation and influences all on display.
The album’s title track, “Cruel Country,” is our Song of the Week.
Join us on the radio starting Friday, Sept. 8 to hear the entire set from Wilco, plus live performances from Peter Case, Guy Davis, and Garrison Starr.
On this week's premiere broadcast of Mountain Stage, we welcome southern rock royalty, the Drive-By Truckers back to the Mountain Stage for their fifth appearance. Guest host Larry Groce also welcomes West Virginia country rocker and songwriter Charles Wesley Godwin, singer songwriter Eilen Jewell, Afrofuturist folk artist Jake Blount with percussive dancer Nic Gareiss, and contemporary folk musician Tomberlin.
Amy Ray returns to Mountain Stage on this week’s premier broadcast with her band, along with The Lone Bellow, Alison Brown, Tony Furtado, and Villages. This episode was recorded at the People's Bank Theatre in Marietta, Ohio with guest host Larry Groce.
This performance by jazz and blues vocalist Catherine Russell comes from a 2006 Mountain Stage show where she put her special touch on “New Speedway Boogie,” a song written by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia, first popularized by The Grateful Dead.
This week’s encore broadcast of Mountain Stage was recorded in Boston, Massachusetts when we were invited by the Celebrity Series of Boston at the Berklee Performance Center, with thanks to our affiliate WUMB.
