Stephen ?Chris? Anders is the current incumbent for District 97 in West Virginia. Anders was born in Hagerstown, Maryland and later relocated to his home Martinsburg, West Virginia. He is a father of three daughters and has spent nearly two decades as an activist, lobbyist, and political consultant. He is affiliated with the National Association for Gun Rights, Young Americans for Liberty, and the Foundation for Applied Conservative Leadership. He won his current position in 2024 and while in office, has self-identified as a constitutional conservative and currently serves as Chair of the West Virginia House Freedom Caucus. He has worked on legislation regarding government restriction, elimination of tax breaks, fought for renewable energy subsidies, and ensured medical freedoms for West Virginians. He is a current farmer, and strictly avoids lobbyist events, centering his campaign focus on grassroots activism. He sponsored measures allowing permit holders to carry concealed firearms inside the state Capitol and permitting trained school employees to carry concealed weapons on school grounds.
