On this West Virginia Morning, two county boards of education are expected to vote on a proposal for a charter school in West Virginia. We bring you the latest information ahead of the vote. Also, in this show, we get to know Inside Appalachia’s two new hosts.
Both the Preston and Monongalia County Board of Education will consider a proposal which would establish the first public charter school in West Virginia. It would be based in Morgantown and serve both counties. If the proposal passes at the county level, it would then move on to the West Virginia Department of Education. Gov. Jim Justice signed into law the option for West Virginia to establish up to three public charter schools between now and 2023. The law allows the possibility for more, after that. Education reporter Liz McCormick reached out to learn more about the proposed school and to explore the debate over charters.
West Virginia Public Broadcasting’s podcast Inside Appalachia has two new show hosts. Jessica Lilly can still be heard on the show for occasional field reports. Caitlin Tan and Mason Adams recently sat down to introduce themselves as the new hosts of Inside Appalachia.
