Field Engineer

Position Classification

This is a full-time position providing technical support for the operation, maintenance, and reliability of West Virginia Public Broadcasting radio, television, networking, and transmission facilities throughout the State of West Virginia.

Reports To

Director of Engineering and Information Technology (IT) or designee.

Position Summary

The Field Engineer is responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of broadcast transmission systems, translators, microwave systems, networking equipment, studio equipment, and related infrastructure supporting statewide public broadcasting services.

Essential Functions

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair radio, television, microwave, networking, and related broadcast equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance at transmitter sites, studios, and support facilities throughout the state.
  • Diagnose and resolve RF, audio, video, networking, automation, and control-system issues.
  • Maintain generators, HVAC systems, remote-control equipment, monitoring systems, and other site infrastructure.
  • Assist with equipment upgrades, construction projects, system integrations, and technology deployments.
  • Respond to emergency outages and service interruptions.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, equipment inventories, and technical documentation.
  • Assist with FCC compliance activities and technical reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate with vendors, contractors, utilities, and other stakeholders on technical projects.
  • Support live broadcasts, remote productions, and special events as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • No tower climbing is involved; ladder height only.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of RF transmission systems and broadcast engineering principles.
  • Knowledge of IP networking, computer systems, and telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex technical systems and identify root causes of equipment failures.
  • Knowledge of audio, video, automation, and control systems used in broadcasting.
  • Ability to read technical drawings, schematics, and equipment manuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, vendors, contractors, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Electronics, Engineering Technology, Information Technology, Telecommunications, or a related field; or equivalent training and experience.
  • Experience troubleshooting electronic, RF, networking, or broadcast systems.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel statewide.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted.
