WVU Economist: W.Va. ‘Desperately Needs Industrial Diversification’ to Strengthen Economic Portfolio

Listen

On The Legislature Today, host Andrea Lannom sits down with John Deskins, the Director of West Virginia University’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research to talk about the state’s economy, the hits it’s taken, the challenges still ahead, and the investments we need to make for desired returns.

Deskins says while there is optimism about the state’s economic forecast, there should also be a sense of urgency.

One of those issues is the need for investment in Human Capital – which is the objective of Senate Bill 284, according to supporters.

The bill would provide a grant program for students attending West Virginia’s community and technical colleges. Senate Finance Chairman Craig Blair spoke passionately in favor of the bill on the Senate floor.

It was also Higher Education Day at the Capitol, and some 4-year private college representatives took the opportunity to express concern about Senate Bill 284. They believe they should have a seat at the table when discussing a grant program for two-year technical degrees.
