Officials are planning to unveil a new mode of public transportation in downtown Charleston.

Tourism officials say they plan a news conference Friday. In attendance will be the chief executive officer of Pittsburgh-based Autopods, which operates a fleet of small cabs. They are powered by foot pedals with electric batteries for use on hills.

According to Autopods’ website, the service charges a flat fare for the general public and can be booked for special events such as weddings and festivals. The vehicles are intended for short trips.

A news conference that was set for Thursday at Haddad Riverfront Park was postponed due to other events involving presidential politics in the city.
