Election 2020: Get To Know Capito, Swearengin — W.Va. Candidates For U.S. Senate

On this West Virginia Morning, we profile the West Virginia candidates vying for a seat in the United States Senate. Also, in this show, as we enter the flu season, we hear from a specialist who studies viruses.

One of West Virginia’s two U.S. Senate seats is on the ballot this year. Republican Sen. Shelley Moore Capito has held this office since 2015, and she’s seeking reelection. Capito faces Democrat Paula Jean Swearengin who has never held a political office but believes her ideas and experiences are exactly what the state needs in Congress. Liz McCormick brings us this look at both candidates.

Terry Fenger is a virologist at the Marshall University School of Medicine. For more than 40 years, he has been teaching medical students about viruses they may encounter in their practice — from influenza to the coronavirus. He spoke with Eric Douglas about the current pandemic and how it may interact with the coming flu season.
