A Clarksburg pain doctor has been sentenced to five years in prison for conspiring to distribute prescription pain pills.

The Exponent Telegram reports 76-year-old Edita Milan will serve time for improperly prescribing drugs from her pain management office in Bridgeport. Investigators say drugs from the clinic may have led to more than 10 overdose deaths.

Milan had pleaded no contest in December to five felony counts of illegally distributing prescription drugs.

Milan’s defense attorneys had sought house arrest for their client. They say she is the caregiver for her ailing husband and she suffers from scoliosis and high blood pressure.

Assistant U.S. attorney Andrew Cogar says he hopes the sentence has a deterrent effect on people who might be illegally distributing prescription drugs.
