Road Bond Referendum Map: County Results

Voters approved the $1.6 billion road bond proposal, 73 percent to 27 percent in unofficial statewide results.

But different counties supported the bond at different levels, from a high of 94 percent in McDowell to a low of 46.5 percent in Ritchie (the only county to go against the bond.) Use our interactive map below to find out more.

Saturday, April 8 marks the 60th and final day of the 83rd West Virginia Legislature's First Regular Session. 

In his proposed budget, Governor Justice proposes the elimination of all state funding for West Virginia Public Broadcasting.

We believe this would be unwise and irresponsible. We understand the state needs to save money, but such a drastic and immediate cut threatens the very existence of our state’s PBS and NPR stations.

West Virginia Public Broadcasting (WVPB) is a state agency that receives about half its revenues from the state. For every $1 the state invests in it, WVPB matches it with $1.

The recent downturn in coal mining has slowed its spread, but mountaintop removal mining has already reached across the coalfields over the past 30 years.

Using a Google app called Timelapse, you can observe the changes in the central Appalachian coalfields, especially southern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky.

  Today, as results come in across the country, NPR reporters will be updating this breaking news blog in real time. The NPR Politics team, along with Member station reporters, will be providing live updates in the form of photo, video, commentary and analysis for both national and local contested races.

In West Virginia, a Democrat will remain in the governor's mansion and Republicans will keep control of both the state Senate and House of Delegates. Mostly told, it was an election that represented the status quo in state politics aside from a few exceptions.

FEMA-- the Federal Emergency Management Agency-- is well known for its individual housing assistance program- a federal program that helps homeowners and renters who have lost their housing and belongings in natural disasters, but the agency has another program that helps states and local governments rebuild.

Over the past two weeks, 12 counties have been given federal disaster declarations. Severe flooding in those counties destroyed thousands of homes and businesses and many are looking to the federal government--specifically the Federal Emergency Management Agency--for help in rebuilding.

Heavy flooding in West Virginia has claimed tens of lives in the state, and Governor Tomblin has declared a state of emergency in 44 of the 55 counties. Use our map to discover some of the communities that were most affected by the storms.

As of Saturday afternoon, 23 fatalities related to the flooding have been confirmed by state emergency officials after storms rolled into West Virginia early Thursday. Thousands were left without power and several roads rendered impassable.

As many as five fatalities related to the flooding were reported as of midday Friday after storms rolled into West Virginia early Thursday. Thousands were left without power and several roads rendered impassable.

Eighth graders in public, private and home school education programs are eligible to compete on the four-person teams in double-elimination tournament play. The regional tournament winners and the runner-up team move forward to the state tournament held in on April 26, 2016, in the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex, in Charleston.

According to the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard, every public college and university in West Virginia costs less to attend than the national average of $17,500. 

However, only 4 schools meet or exceed the national earning power after attending.  Shepherd University, West Virginia University, and two WVU-affiliated schools, (Potomac State College and WVU Institute of Technology) exceed the average national salary of $36,000; salary information was unreported for several state schools.

For a second time, a West Virginia man is challenging the tobacco ban at state college campuses.

The Dominion Post reports that Dennis Cole filed a similar suit in 2013 and it was dismissed. His latest filing occurred this week in Monongalia County Circuit Court.

This season's premiere broadcast of Joy to the World featuring vocalist Heather Masse can be heard on West Virginia Public Broadcasting Tuesday, December 23 at 9pm, Wednesday December 24 at 9pm, and Thursday, December 25 at 3pm. The 21st annual holiday jazz show was recorded last December when the production went on the road for the first time, recording shows in Charleston, Elkins and Morgantown, WV .
