W.Va. Envrionmental Regulators Brace for Tank Registration Deluge

State regulators are expecting a deluge of last-minute above-ground storage tank registrations.

A new state law requires owners to register above-ground storage tanks by Oct. 1. State officials estimate up to 80,000 tanks could meet the law’s registration requirements.

Department of Environmental Protection spokeswoman Kelley Gillenwater tells The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register that 41,565 tanks were either registered or in the process of being registered as of Monday morning.

Gillenwater says there haven’t been any problems with the DEP’s online registration system. But she says DEP officials are concerned that a last-minute jump in registrations could inundate the system and slow it down.
