A company official says a burst pipe caused an ammonia leak at a northern West Virginia factory that makes frozen treats.

Wednesday’s leak at the Ziegenfelder plant in Wheeling prompted the factory to be evacuated. WTOV-TV reports at least three workers who had breathing problems were treated at a hospital and released.

Ziegenfelder President and CEO Lisa Allen says the pipe has been repaired and the factory was scheduled to reopen by late Thursday. The plant uses ammonia for its refrigeration system.

The factory makes BudgetSaver twin pops and other frozen treats sold in grocery stores nationwide.
