An Electoral College Explainer On This West Virginia Morning

Listen

On this West Virginia Morning, we hear from a professor of political science about the electoral college and the process to finalize the results of the 2020 race for president of the United States. Also, we listen to this week’s Mountain Stage Song of the Week brought to you by musician John Darnielle.

On Dec. 14, electoral votes for the president will officially be cast in all 50 states. In normal years, the Electoral College is often considered a formality in the election process for the president. According to experts, it is the Electoral College that actually decides who will be president, not the voters in the United States. Eric Douglas spoke with Bradford Deel, a professor of Political Science at the University of Charleston to find out more about the system.

John Darnielle has become one of America’s most beloved songwriters. Notable for his literary lyrics and a stripped-down sound, Darnielle has garnered a cult following and has a remarkably prolific output. He and his band, The Mountain Goats last visited Mountain Stage in 2018. They bring us this week’s Mountain Stage Song of the Week, “The Grey King and The Silver Flame Attunement” from the band’s 2017 album, Goths.
