A nearly $500,000 federal grant is set to expand adult education opportunities across West Virginia.

The West Virginia Network says it has received funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Distance Learning and Telemedicine grant program.

The funds will help students participate in live video classes from their laptop or tablet using a web conferencing system.

Officials say the money will expand online learning opportunities for adults seeking to complete a Regents Bachelor of Arts degree.

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission has placed an increased emphasis on helping adult learners complete postsecondary education.

Officials say nearly 20 percent of adults in West Virginia have some college credits but no degree.
