West Virginia's U.S. senators say Bluefield will get $2 million from the federal Economic Development Administration to develop an industrial incubator for start-up businesses in the region hit hard by the decline in coal mining.

According to Sens. Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito, incubator projects are needed to lay the groundwork for tech innovation and help the state strengthen and diversity its economy.

Mitch McConnell says the country must not turn its back on the nation's coal miners — but that's exactly what those miners say the Republican Senate Majority Leader is doing.

For two years, McConnell has repeatedly blocked efforts to rescue a pension plan and health benefits for 13,000 retired union miners in his home state. Many face a slow death from black lung disease and other chronic ailments.

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito led a Senate hearing in southern West Virginia today focused on the local impacts of the Clean Power Plan. The Clean Air and Nuclear Safety Subcommittee meeting took place at Chief Logan Conference Center in southern West Virginia. Capito is the subcommittee chairwoman. She was joined by Sen. Joe Manchin and U.S. Rep. Evan Jenkins.

The meeting addressed regulations stalled in court that put limits on each state’s carbon output. Many West Virginia officials oppose them because the regulations increase stress on the coal industry.

Governor Earl Ray Tomblin joined environmental officials Friday morning to award a $1 million grant that will benefit workers affected by layoffs in three coal counties.

Tomblin announced the award Friday at the Ralph R. Willis Career and Technical Center, in Logan. He says the grant will support stream clean-up efforts in Boone, Logan, and Mingo counties.

A West Virginia group that helps retrain coal miners who were laid off is receiving an $800,000 federal grant.

U.S. Sens. Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito announced the grant Thursday for the Coalfield Development Corporation's factory in Wayne.

A federal bill to protect the pensions and health care benefits of thousands of retired miners is one step closer to becoming law. 

Both of West Virginia’s senators are urging its passage by the end of the year.

A Senate panel has opened a preliminary investigation into why the price of lifesaving EpiPens has skyrocketed.

The top Republican and Democrat on the Senate Homeland's investigations subcommittee said in a statement Wednesday that they began an inquiry into Mylan Pharmaceuticals' pricing and competition practices. Mylan has been sharply criticized for its steep price increases for the emergency allergy treatment EpiPen.

U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz is scheduled to visit a West Virginia coal-fired power plant alongside congressional leaders.

Longview Power says Moniz is expected to tour the plant near Morgantown on Monday. U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin and Rep. David McKinley are slated to join.

Sen. Joe Manchin says U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz is accepting his offer to visit his coal-dependent home state of West Virginia.

The West Virginia Democrat says Moniz agreed to visit the Mountain State in September. Additional details for the trip have not been released yet.

U.S. Senator and former governor Joe Manchin was born in Fairmont on August 24, 1947. Growing up in the Marion County town of Farmington, he worked in his family’s grocery and furniture stores. He later returned to Farmington to run Manchin’s Carpet Center and eventually his own energy-brokering firm.

In the 1980s, the lifelong Democrat served a term in the House of Delegates and began a 14-year stint in the state Senate, where he promoted welfare, health care, and Medicaid reforms. A staunch Catholic, he opposed abortion rights, putting him at odds with many Democrats.

Ride-sharing company Uber is now officially operating in two West Virginia cities. The company opened up shop in Charleston and Morgantown on Tuesday.
