Mountain East Conference

A new agreement will keep the Mountain East Conference's annual basketball tournaments in Charleston through 2017.

The agreement between the City of Charleston, the Charleston Convention and Visitor's Bureau and the Charleston Civics Center will keep both the men's and women's basketball tournaments in the capital city for the next three years.

West Virginia University's board has scheduled a special meeting to discuss the possible purchase of Mountain State University's campus in Beckley.

The meeting is set for Dec. 5 in Morgantown. The possible purchase is the only item on the agenda.

The Concord University Football program ended the regular season undefeated, giving them a home field advantage for their first playoff game.

The Mountain Lions earned that spot after winning the Mountain East Conference title, when they ousted Shepherd University. This is Concord’s second playoff berth in four years. Concord will play the winner of the game between West Chester University and Slippery Rock University. Both of those teams will travel to West Virginia from Pennsylvania.

An 18-year-old student at the center of an investigation into the conduct at fraternities and sororities at WVU has died.

Late Wednesday night, police were called to the Kappa Sigma fraternity. They found someone performing CPR on Michael Nolan Burch. Preston said Burch had no pulse and wasn't breathing. He was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital, where he died today.

Fall enrollment is down at most of West Virginia's public four-year colleges and universities. The Charleston Gazette says state figures show about 65,400 students are enrolled in public four-year schools. That's down 1.6 percent from the fall of 2013.

Some 2,000 boxes of documents, 500 gigabytes of data and hundreds of pieces of memorabilia now have a new home at West Virginia University after President E. Gordon Gee and Senator Jay Rockefeller announced Saturday the university's library will serve as Rockefeller's official Senatorial archive.

West Virginia University announced Thursday it is exploring the purchase of the former Mountain State University Beckley campus.The University announced a due diligence agreement in a press release. The agreement allows WVU to explore the facilities, location, and academic programs among many other areas at Mountain State to determine if it meets their academic and fiscal expectations.


  Three West Virginia University students were expelled from campus Thursday for various acts of misconduct following Saturday's WVU-Baylor football game. 

Other students may also face University sanctions as various law enforcement agencies complete their investigations and reports and provide that information to the University. These cases are independent of any state or local criminal penalties and fines the students may face.

  A higher education official says more West Virginia high school seniors are qualifying for the state's PROMISE scholarship.

Higher Education Policy Commission financial aid senior director Brian Weingart also says the college graduation rate of PROMISE recipients is higher than the general student body's rate.

The Community and Technical College System of West Virginia has announced more than 4,500 degrees were awarded during the 2013-2014 school year.

Between 2009 and 2014, the number of certificate degrees awarded in the state more than doubled from 539 to 1,476.

A Jan. 15 hearing is scheduled in Charleston on a proposed settlement of hundreds of lawsuits against the now defunct Mountain State University.

A three-judge mass litigation panel gave preliminary approval to the settlement Monday following a hearing in Beckley.

The proposed settlement will establish a fund to compensate over 14,000 students who filed claims when the university lost its accreditation in 2012.

Yesterday's decision allows the former university to begin liquidating its assets.

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission kicked off an initiative in Charleston Tuesday meant to push college students across the state to finish their degrees on time.

The ‘15 to Finish’ campaign’s main goal is to encourage students to take 15 credit hours a semester in order to finish their 4-year-degrees in four years.

Three West Virginia community and technical colleges have been awarded more than $9 million in federal funding for a workforce training initiative.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and Rep. Nick Rahall announced the grant on Monday in a news release. The funding is part of a nationwide effort to assist military members and veterans.

  WAYNE, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia is kicking off a $300,000 advertising push to promote education beyond high school.
     Gov.  Tomblin announced the initiative at Wayne High School on Wednesday.
     The My State, My Life campaign will focus on television, radio, movie theaters, print distribution and social media.
     The campaign targets middle- and high-school students. Its messaging stresses that students can build dream careers in West Virginia, but need to take charge of their lives and educations.

While it’s no longer politically correct to use racist, or gender-related remarks that stereotype groups of people, what about negative West Virginian or Appalachian stereotypes?

Appalachians are commonly stereotyped as white, lazy, tobacco smoking, overall-wearing, poor farmers with poor dental hygiene, no indoor plumbing, and no shoes.

So how does that influence the pursuit of an education? Well it depends on the individual Appalachian mindset. The conversation about the connection and possible impact continues with this second report.

Concord University is participating in banned books week. Library officials released a list of books that have been “identified as morally, visually or otherwise unsuitable to read” at one time.

Banned books week is celebrated in libraries across the country to commemorated the freedom to read unorthodox material. It’s considered a way to fight censorship and share ideas.

Concord University is marking a new era with the inauguration of the 12th president. 

Dr. Kendra Boggess is a former Business Division Chair with more than three decades of service at Concord in academics and administration. 

Boggess was born in Iowa but grew up in Florida. She’s a first generation college graduate who’s worked since the age of 15.

Concord University was once again named among the best colleges in the region by an influential report.

U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges annual report was released earlier this week. Concord University was ranked in more than one area.

Concord University ranked fifth in the Best Regional Colleges South. The Regional Colleges category focuses on schools that focus primarily on undergraduate study.

The rankings are based on criteria that measure academic quality.

  Two West Virginia schools are getting federal funding to improve higher education.

Sens. Joe Manchin and Jay Rockefeller on Friday said that the University of Charleston and West Virginia Wesleyan College are receiving money from U.S. Department of Education's Strengthening Institutes Program.

Faculty and staff at Marshall University are getting pay raises.

The Herald-Dispatch reports that Marshall's Board of Governors approved the pay raises on Wednesday during its regular meeting. The raises total about $1.5 million.


  The average score of West Virginia students taking the ACT college entrance exam remained the same for the fourth straight year.

The state Department of Education says overall test scores in West Virginia this year averaged 20.6.

Students showed a slight improvement in reading scores at 21.4. Scores were unchanged in science at 20.6 and math at 19.5, while English scores dipped slightly to 20.4.

  Police issued more than 180 citations and arrested more than a dozen people during West Virginia University students' first weekend in Morgantown for the fall semester.

Preliminary figures released Tuesday by Morgantown police show 82 citations were issued for underage drinking between last Friday and Monday.

  The University of Charleston says it has reached a tentative settlement of lawsuits filed by former Mountain State University students against the now-defunct Beckley school.

The proposed settlement announced Wednesday would resolve hundreds of lawsuits and set up a compensation fund for former Mountain State students.

West Virginia University officials say the number of students on its Morgantown campuses is expected to look similar to last year's total.

While the school will do its official count in October, this year's freshman class should be between 4,900 and 5,000 first-time students.

The Dominion Post reports there were nearly 30 thousand students on WVU's main campus last year. That was a slight dip from the previous year and included freshman enrollment of 4,900 students.

 A consultant says Marshall University's Board of Governors is a solid group that compares favorably with other university boards across the country.

The board hired James Lanier with the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges to conduct a self evaluation. The Herald-Dispatch  reports that Lanier met with the board Monday. Most of the meeting was in executive session.

The American Legion is sending representatives to North Central West Virginia this week to help veterans better understand the benefits available to them. A group on Charleston's West Side is working on narrowing down ways they can revive the urban neighborhood. An education summit in Morgantown was focused on redefining college for West Virginia students, and Marie Manilla, a Huntington native, talks about her new book "Patron Saint of Ugly."  


High school teams from all over the country are pitting their robots against each other in a series of events designed to test their ability to work together and endure.

West Virginia's higher education system has a new senior administrator.

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and the West Virginia Council for Community and Technical College Education said Matt Turner will be the agencies' new executive vice chancellor for administration.

West Virginia University President E. Gordon Gee is on the road, part of his statewide 55-county tour.

Thursday, Gee made stops in Raleigh, Mercer and Summers counties. He met with WVU alumni and local business leaders. He traveled with the musket-packing Mountaineer mascot, Michael Garcia.

  The West Virginia University at Parkersburg Board of Governors has named Dr. Marie Foster Gnage president emeritus. Gnage is the sixth president of WVU Parkersburg and the college’s second president, after Dr. Eldon Miller, to receive this designation.

A news release issued Thursday says a resolution was presented to Gnage at the June 2014 board meeting.

The board recognized Gnage’s leadership in many non-profit organizations and local, state and national higher education initiatives.
