News outlets report 51-year-old Jacqueline Holly Portillo of Hurricane pleaded guilty Monday to four felony embezzlement counts.

A former bookkeeper has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $183,000 in labor union funds in West Virginia.

Prosecutors say 70-year-old Joan Matthews of South Charleston entered the plea Monday in federal court in Charleston to felony embezzlement and theft of labor union assets.

A former director of a Welsh-area human services agency is facing possible time behind bars after being arrested on embezzlement and fraudulent schemes charges.

The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports the West Virginia State Police say in a statement that 42-year-old Shanita Evans was charged Friday with fraudulent use of an access device, embezzlement, fraudulent schemes and obtaining under false pretenses.

A Tennessee woman who admitted embezzling $36,000 from a youth mentoring group in West Virginia has been sentenced to at least a year in prison.

Thirty-seven-year-old Stephanie Jordan of Iron City, Tennessee, is a former bookkeeper for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Tri-State in Cabell County. She pleaded guilty to embezzlement in February 2015, when she told a judge that much of the unauthorized purchases went toward medical bills for her son.

The Exponent Telegram reports that former West Union City Clerk Joe Edward Cross appeared Wednesday for his arraignment on felony charges before Doddridge Magistrate Jamie Lou Moran.

The government says Ceressa B. Patterson pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of embezzling nearly $2,000 from the Postal Service. She had worked at the Pentress Post Office.

A former fire chief has pleaded guilty to embezzling money from the Rivesville Volunteer Fire Department.

The Times West Virginian reports 31-year-old Justin Stover pleaded guilty Tuesday. He was accused of embezzling money from the fire department from January 2012 through December 2013 while acting as fire chief.

The Wayne County assessor has resigned ahead of a hearing on whether he should be removed from office.

Eric Hodges submitted his letter of resignation on Friday. He has been in jail since late August on charges of embezzlement, computer fraud and two counts of unlawful use of a state purchasing card, among other charges.

Two former labor union officials have been indicted on embezzlement charges.

U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld II says a federal grand jury in Wheeling returned indictments Tuesday against 54-year-old James Coffey Jr. of Bergholz, Ohio, and 55-year-old Jeffrey Beresford of Cameron, West Virginia.

Wayne County Assessor Eric Hodges faces charges of using a county purchasing card to buy items for personal use.

Media outlets report that West Virginia State Police arrested Hodges on Tuesday. The 41-year-old Wayne resident is charged with felony embezzlement, computer fraud and fraudulent use of a credit card.

A former employee faces charges of stealing thousands of dollars' worth of equipment and supplies from the West Virginia Division of Highways.

 

The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown, Maryland, says a Berkeley County grand jury indicted 57-year-old William Robert Smallwood of Martinsburg on Friday. Smallwood is charged with felony obtaining money or goods by false pretenses, fraudulent use of a credit card and embezzlement.

A Virginia woman convicted of embezzling from the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles has received a suspended sentence and probation.

Forty-seven-year-old Rhonda Ann Thomas of Bluefield, Virginia, was sentenced Wednesday in Mercer County Circuit Court.

  A former Fairmont State University official will spend more than three years in prison for embezzling from the school.

David A. Tamm pleaded guilty in January to embezzling from a state agency receiving federal funds. He also admitted falsely reporting less income than he received on his 2012 federal income tax return.

The former head of a Huntington-based regional food bank has pleaded guilty to embezzling from the charity.

Fifty-seven-year-old Leigh Anne Zappin of Huntington admitted to taking more than $32,000 from the former Huntington Area Food Bank in 2012.

Zappin pleaded guilty Monday in Cabell County Circuit Court to one felony embezzlement count.

A former Fairmont State University official faces up to 13 years in prison after pleading guilty to embezzlement and tax charges.
