A Conversation With Author Corey Doctorow And Our Song Of The Week, This West Virginia Morning

On this West Virginia Morning, Bill Lynch speaks with science fiction and technology writer Corey Doctorow, who will present this year’s McCreight Lecture at the University of Charleston.

On this West Virginia Morning, science fiction and technology writer Corey Doctorow will present this year’s McCreight Lecture in the Humanities Thursday night in Geary Auditorium at the University of Charleston.

An award-winning author, he’s written novels and young adult fiction, as well as essays and non-fiction books about technology. Bill Lynch spoke with Doctorow in advance of his visit to Charleston.

Also, in this show, on this week’s premiere broadcast of Mountain Stage, host Kathy Mattea welcomes songwriter and storytelling wild man Steve Poltz – who has our Song of the Week.

In this delightfully fizzy performance of “Can O’ Pop,” Poltz is backed by the Mountain Stage Band. The song comes from his most recent album Stardust & Satellites, which was released earlier this year.

WATCH LIVE: The Milk Carton Kids, Steve Poltz and more on Mountain Stage

We’re excited to announce that you can watch Sunday’s Mountain Stage show live from anywhere thanks to the video production team at West Virginia Public Broadcasting and our partners at VuHaus. Just point your browser to this post, MountainStage.org or VuHaus.com to watch along. There’s no charge to watch along, but you can always make a gift if you’re feeling generous

There’s nothing like being there, though, and tickets are still available! You still have a chance to join us at the Culture Center Theater this Sunday as host Larry Groce welcomes roots-duo The Milk Carton Kids, the incomparable Steve Poltz, ethereal singer, songwriter and poet Vera Sola, indie-pop string band Twisted Pine, and veteran tunesmith Griffin House.

All the Things That I Did & All the Things That I Didn’t Do is the latest release from Los Angeles based duo The Milk Carton Kids. Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale worked with the masterful producer Joe Henry, whose attention to lyrics deeply informs his musical production style.

Describing the music of Vera Sola is a challenge- poetic and unapologetic, beautifully arranged and distinctly unique. Vera Sola played all the instruments herself, resulting in a beautifully arranged collection that is her debut record Shadows.

Mountain Stage's Favorite Performances of 2016

2016 was a big year for NPR Music and West Virginia Public Broadcasting‘s Mountain Stage. We celebrated 33 years of live performance radio, commemorated the 25th anniversary of R.E.M.’s legendary set, and listened to the voices of two new guest hosts

And across seven venues in four states, we recorded over 120 live sets that showcased the best and brightest musicians in the world today. Along the way, we video streamed eight of our shows through VuHaus and made some new #gotowv friends along the way (with posters and glass records in tow!).  Of course, none of this would have happened without your support.

Before we embark on another musical year around the sun, Larry Groce and the Mountain Stage crew have picked out 33 performances that deserve another listen and another round of applause. From A to Z, these are our favorite Mountain Stage performances of 2016. (Hint: click the Episode # for their Mountain Stage podcast episode, where available.)
