Mountain Biking World Series Makes Stop In Pocahontas County

The UCI Mountain Bike World Series came to Pocahontas County this past week for its penultimate event of the year.

World class mountain biking was on display this weekend as Snowshoe Mountain Resort played host to cyclists from across the globe. 

The UCI Mountain Bike World Series came to Pocahontas County this past week for its penultimate event of the year.

UCI, which stands for International Cycling Union in French, is the world governing body for sports cycling and oversees international competitive cycling events including the Tour de France. 

Riders competed in the UCI Cross Country and Downhill World Cups, as well as the final round of the UCI Marathon World Cup, a 100 km loop from the slopes of Snowshoe to Durbin, West Virginia and back.

Best known for its winter sports, Snowshoe has also developed a reputation for top tier mountain biking. The UCI Mountain Biking website calls Snowshoe “the epicenter of the Mid-Atlantic’s mountain bike culture” and a staple of their World Cup circuit.

Snowshoe previously hosted UCI World Cup events in 2019 and 2021, and will next host a USA Cycling Team event in mid-October. 

The World Series was in France before coming to West Virginia, and will move later this week to the Quebec province of Canada.

Funding For Trails, Sidewalks, Bike Paths Announced In W.Va.

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice has announced more than $8.3 million in projects for recreational trails, sidewalks, and biking and walking paths.

The 29 improvement projects in 21 counties will be funded by the Federal Highway Administration.

“This program will provide millions of dollars that is going to be put to work making our cities and towns easier to get around and making our beautiful park trails even more appealing and accessible to West Virginians of all abilities,” Justice said in a statement Monday.

The projects include nearly $1.1 million for sidewalk replacement in the city of Martinsburg, $934,000 for a bike and pedestrian path in Barboursville Park in Cabell County, and nearly $660,000 for replacement sidewalks in the Boone County community of Madison.

Other funding includes improvements along the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System and the Greenbrier River Trail, new bike trails within Cacapon State Park and the construction of boardwalk and observation areas along a trail within Twin Falls Resort Park.

College Mountain Bikers To Compete in West Virginia

Snowshoe Mountain resort will host a national championship for college mountain bikers later this month.

More than 60 teams will compete in individual and team relay events for men and women at the USA Cycling Collegiate Nationals from Oct. 22 to 25 in Pocahontas County.

The event also will be held next year at Snowshoe’s Bike Park, which has more than 40 trails accessible by lifts.

Last year’s event was held at Beech Mountain, North Carolina.

Endurance Mountain Bike Race Planned at Big Bear Lake Trail Center

Hundreds of people will converge this weekend at Big Bear Lake Trail Center in northern West Virginia for an annual endurance mountain bike race.

“This is our 6th year of doing the Big Bear Lake 2 x 12, which  is a two-person team relay race racing on 12-mile, single-track loops,” said Jeff Simcoe, the race promoter and the recreation land manager at the Big Bear Lake Trail Center.

Simcoe expects to attract some 200 racers, professional bikers and fans. But there are also races for the slightly less ambitious riders.

“We have a pro-open class that guarantees $6,000 in cash prizes, we have a sport class, and we have a two-for-fun class that for someone who is maybe just getting into mountain bike racing and maybe wants to experience a high-level event,” Sincoe said.

 
There will also be tike races. For the littles. Simcoe says it’s a family-friendly event. The race is Saturday, June 13, 2015, and there will be music, camping, and craft beer afterward. On-site registration Friday June 12th from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Race Day Registration until 9 am.
