Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams Have the Mountain Stage Song of the Week

After being a part of the band for legendary drummer and singer Levon Helm- and frequently guesting with heavyweights like Phil Lesh, Little Feat, and Hot Tuna’s Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady- multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter Larry Campbell and singer-guitarist Teresa Williams make their most beautiful music together. The duo appears on Mountain Stage for the second time during this week’s broadcast, recorded in October of 2019 in Charleston, W.Va.

Together, Larry and Teresa have released two exceptional albums, including their most recent Contraband Love. Our Song of the Week is the pair’s rousing version of the gospel blues tune “Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning,” which is featured on their debut, self-titled album.

Larry and Teresa recently launched “It Was The Music”, a film in 10 episodes chronicling the lives and love of Larry Campbell and Teresa Willams, directed by award-winning filmmaker Mark Moskowitz. The all-star cast includes Jackson Browne, Emmylou Harris, Rosanne Cash, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Lucinda Williams and many more. Watch the trailer here and find out where you can see the film, available on multiple platforms, at this link.

Hear the entire set from Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams, as well as energetic performances from Robert Randolph & The Family Band, songwriter Hayes Carll, singer-songwriter and new author Allison Moorer, and Ireland’s Mick Flannery, on this week’s episode of Mountain Stage with guest host Kathy Mattea.

Listen to Mountain Stage on one of these stations across the country, and be sure to follow our Facebook page for more live musical performances.

From 2016: Hayes Carll, Darrell Scott, Parker Millsap, Brennen Leigh and Carrie Rodriguez

We’re looking back to this 2016 episode featuring Hayes Carll, Darrell Scott, Parker Millsap, Carrie Rodriquez and Brennen Leigh.

Recorded just five days after the loss of songwriting great Guy Clark, who passed away May 17, 2016. The show quickly turned into somewhat of a tribute to Clark since each of the guests had a personal connection of some sort to the highly respected tunesmith.

Listen: Hot Club of Cowtown Have Our Song of the Week

This week on Mountain Stage we look back to another classic episode from 2010, this time featuring live performances from Cake, Hayes Carll, Old 97s and Hot Club of Cowtown. Tune in on one of these public radio stations starting this Friday, May 1.

When they appeared in 2010, Texas trio Hot Club of Cowtown were touring in support of their excellent Texas swing album What Makes Bob Holler? This tribute to the pioneer of Western Swing Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys found the band covering classics like “Stay a Little Longer” and “Faded Love.” Our Song of the Week, “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love, Baby” appears on their 2003 album Continental Stomp.

Hot Club of Cowtown joined us earlier this year with songs from their latest The Finest Hour. A live album recorded in Minneapolis, The Finest Hour is filled with a “glorious array of music on the radio across the United States in 1945 at the end of WWII and celebrates artists from Bing Crosby to Billie Holiday, Bob Wills to Doris Day.

Members of Old 97’s, Hot Club of Cowtown, Hayes Carll and Cake gather for the finale song on December 5, 2010,

You’ll also hear an interactive set from alt-rockers Cake, a band set from Hayes Carll, and a predictably raucous set from country-rockers Old 97s. Check out the playlist and find out where you can hear the show on one of these public radio stations and enjoy the sound of audience applause that we’re all admittedly missing right about now.

Mountain Stage's Favorite Performances of 2016

2016 was a big year for NPR Music and West Virginia Public Broadcasting‘s Mountain Stage. We celebrated 33 years of live performance radio, commemorated the 25th anniversary of R.E.M.’s legendary set, and listened to the voices of two new guest hosts

And across seven venues in four states, we recorded over 120 live sets that showcased the best and brightest musicians in the world today. Along the way, we video streamed eight of our shows through VuHaus and made some new #gotowv friends along the way (with posters and glass records in tow!).  Of course, none of this would have happened without your support.

Before we embark on another musical year around the sun, Larry Groce and the Mountain Stage crew have picked out 33 performances that deserve another listen and another round of applause. From A to Z, these are our favorite Mountain Stage performances of 2016. (Hint: click the Episode # for their Mountain Stage podcast episode, where available.)
