This week’s broadcast reflects on some of our favorite performers who appeared on Mountain Stage in recent years during FestivALL Charleston, the city-wide arts celebration that helps our hometown become a work of art throughout the year, including their summer and fall festivals.
For this retrospective our host, Larry Groce (a co-founder of FestivALL), chose some of the best performances in recent years, including Todd Snider, Lucius, Alsarah & the Nubatones, and a couple West Virginia artists, William Matheny and John R. Miller, to name a few. The show culminates with an outstanding set from The Wood Brothers, whose track “Can’t Look Away” is our Song of the Week.
Hear this special “FestivALL Favorites” episode starting Friday, June 19 on these public radio stations. Here in West Virginia you can tune to WVPB at 8p.m. on Saturday, June 20 (West Virginia Day!) and Friday June 26. See the entire playlist here and be sure to watch for our special virtual presentation, “There’s a Stream,” coming on Sunday, June 28 at 7p.m. at MountainStage.org and LiveSessions.NPR.org.
We revisit The Wood Brothers’ third appearance on Mountain Stage as part of this week’s encore episode. The trio’s high-energy set includes songs from their exceptional album “One Drop of Truth,” released in February 2018.
They also perform “Chocolate On My Tongue,” a favorite from their 2006 debut album “Ways Not To Lose,” which is our Mountain Stage Song of the Week.
“Over the years we’ve written a lot of dessert songs,” front-man Oliver Wood said while introducing the song, “Wish we could do them all, but inspired by the brownies down in catering, we chose this one.”
Hear the entire set from The Wood Brothers, plus the unmatched wit of Todd Snider, legendary troubadors Dave Alvin & Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and emmerging soul rocker Kat Wright, on this week’s encore episode of Mountain Stage with special guest-host Peter Mulvey.
THIS SUNDAY’s Mountain Stage welcomes The Wood Brothers, Dave Alvin & Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Todd Snider, Kat Wright, and special guest-host Peter Mulvey!
We’ll be helping to celebrate the final day of FestivALL Charleston in our favorite kind of way. Tickets for the show are SOLD OUT but you can still join us from anywhere thanks to VuHaus and the WVPB Video Production department.
The Wood Brothers, who released “One Drop of Truth” in February, will return for their third appearance on Mountain Stage this Sunday. If you’d like a little preview, have a listen to their last visit.
Our special guest-host, Peter Mulvey has a recurring gig at the National Youth Science Camp, located in West Virginia, which led to a spoken word piece, “Vlad the Astrophysicist”, which became a TEDx talk, and then an illustrated book. Mulvey performed “Vlad” when he made his most recent appearance on Mountain Stage last September in Morgantown, WV.
It’s going to be a great show and we hope you’ll tune in! Just head on over to MountainStage.org or VuHaus.com at 7pm EST on Sunday evening to watch along.

On Sunday June 24 Mountain Stage will once again be a part of FestivALL Charleston, the city-wide celebration of the arts in our hometown of Charleston, WV. Iconic songwriters Dave Alvin& Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Vermont’s emerging soul-music star Kat Wright, have already been announced. Today we’re adding the next round of artists, and our next guest-host.
The Wood Brothers, who released “One Drop of Truth” in February, will return for their third appearance on Mountain Stage on June 24. Also, just announced, our favorite bare-foot and folk-singing hippie, author and jam band singer Todd Snider will return to Mountain Stage as well. By our best estimate, this will make Todd’s 15th appearance on the show since 1995.
We’re excited to announce that singer, songwriter and guitarist Peter Mulvey will be stepping up to the microphone as our special guest-host. Mulvey has a recurring gig at the National Youth Science Camp, located in West Virginia, which led to a spoken word piece, “Vlad the Astrophysicist”, which became aTEDx talk, and then an illustrated book. Mulvey performed “Vlad” when he made his most recent appearance on Mountain Stage last September in Morgantown, WV.
Tickets for this show are already available online, by phone at 877.987.6487 or locally at Taylor Books in Downtown Charleston. This show will likely sell out, so we recommend getting your tickets soon.
Elsewhere, we’ve added songwriter Caitlyn Smith and #NPRSlingshot artist Haley Heynderickx to the line-up for Sunday June 3, alongside Lee Ann Womack. Tickets for that event are on sale, and already selling well.
Smith is breaking out on her own with her debut album called “Starfire,”after having cuts recorded by Garth Brooks and Meghan Trainor. She will join us just two days after opening for Tim McGraw & Faith Hill at the nearby Charleston Civic Center.

Heynderickx was chosen in the first round of NPR Music’s Slingshot initiative which introduced listeners to her enthralling psych-folk, now fully realized on her powerful debut full-length “I Need To Start A Garden.” Hear for yourself below, and come see the real thing in action June 3.
We’d love to have you in the audience sometime, so visit our friends at the WV Tourism Office and the Charleston, WV CVB, request your travel guides, and plan a trip to see what #AlmostHeaven is all about.

And across seven venues in four states, we recorded over 120 live sets that showcased the best and brightest musicians in the world today. Along the way, we video streamed eight of our shows through VuHaus and made some new #gotowv friends along the way (with posters and glass records in tow!). Of course, none of this would have happened without your support.
Before we embark on another musical year around the sun, Larry Groce and the Mountain Stage crew have picked out 33 performances that deserve another listen and another round of applause.
