Citizen Science Project Brings Pure American Chestnuts Back To Appalachia

A Shepherd University student is leading a citizen science project that aims to repopulate American chestnut trees in Appalachia. American chestnut populations have been threatened for decades by an infectious disease called chestnut blight.

Imagine trees more than 100 feet tall stretching across the skyline of Appalachia; families resting in the shade down below or collecting husks bursting at the seam with chestnuts.

Before the 1900s, sights like these weren’t just imaginary. American chestnuts once reigned supreme in Appalachia, populating forests in 13 present-day states.

But things changed at the turn of the 20th century with the arrival of a new disease: chestnut blight.

“In the early part of the century, a strain came in that affected the chestnut tree, and chestnut trees began to die,” said Sylvia Shurbutt, director of Shepherd University’s Center for Appalachian Studies and Communities.

“By the end of the century, we had virtually no standing chestnut trees in most places,” she said. “The chestnut tree does still live. … [But] the tree will grow for a bit, and then it will die. It will contract the blight.”

According to Shurbutt, chestnut trees were a pivotal part of pre-Civil War Appalachian history.

Chestnut wood helped build log cabins and household furniture. Chestnut forests fostered regional biodiversity. Even chestnuts themselves were a staple of eighteenth and nineteenth-century cuisine.

That’s why Shurbutt and the Center for Appalachian Studies jumped at the opportunity to help repopulate the American chestnut.

“We really want to engage our students and the community in what I think is probably one of the most important and significant things and gifts that we could certainly give,” she said. “That is to bring back an iconic tree, a tree that was the symbol of Appalachia, a tree that was at the heart and soul of what Appalachian stood for.”

The project came to the Eastern Panhandle with the help of Susan Thompson, a graduate student in Appalachian Studies at Shepherd University and an affiliate of West Virginia’s chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation.

Thompson began the local project last year, when she rallied together a team of community members to plant hybrid chestnut trees at a local farm.

These trees were hybridized with Chinese chestnut trees, which made them more resistant to the blight. Now, Thompson’s team aims to replant pure American chestnuts, with a little help from an ecological ally.

“When it has a symbiotic relationship with mycelium, which is the plant that a mushroom grows off of — it’s all these white tendrils. Sort of imagine how the internet has threads going in every direction and connections. It’s like that, the threads going in every direction,” she said.

Mycelium then works with chestnut trees to more efficiently capture resources.

“They connect with the tree roots, and they spread out another 50 feet,” Thompson said. “You may have 80 feet of area that a tree can collect nutrients and water.”

While environmental interventions like these support early growth in American chestnut trees, conservationists are still grappling with how to best protect trees from the threat of chestnut blight.

Finding a cure to the disease is a work in progress, and scientists are looking for answers in the genes of chestnut trees from around the world.

In the meantime, one new strategy has helped extend the lives of ailing trees. It involves taping a package of soil around an infected segment of the tree for months on end, which blocks the disease’s spread.

This is not a catch-all solution, because it doesn’t prevent new infections, and it is harder to use on big trees. More than anything, scientists need more information on how the disease works, and American chestnut resiliency more broadly.

While this American chestnut sapling is just a few feet tall, adult chestnut trees can grow to more than 100 feet.

This, again, is where Thompson comes in.

Thompson is creating a website for a new citizen science project that involves documenting the life cycle of local American chestnuts online, from planting to infection to treatment. That way, researchers have more information on what works and what does not.

“It’s bringing together minds from all over the country. Potentially, we can have people from all over the world,” she said. “But we’re first trying to bring together a group of people in Appalachia who know where these trees are, who can keep an eye on them and provide data about them.”

By engaging with volunteers on an online project, Thompson said she and other self-described “chestnutters” can also offer advice on how to treat infections and protect the species as a whole.

Thompson said the project has good traction so far, but it will take time for Appalachia to see the chestnut forests that were widespread centuries ago.

Still, Thompson said she and other conservationists are excited by the possibilities American chestnut reforestation provides. This includes protecting Appalachian ecosystems, and even combating global warming.

“These trees are out there. We know we have this big problem to solve with cooling the Earth. We have all these people who are excited about chestnuts,” Thompson said. “I’d like to see people join our group.”

“I’d like to see chestnutters making the world cooler,” she added.

Eastern Panhandle Celebrates Decade Of Inpatient Hospice Care

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Hospice of the Panhandle’s inpatient campus in Kearneysville. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., delivered a speech to commemorate the anniversary.

For patients with terminal illnesses, hospice care is a form of health care that provides enhanced comfort and quality-of-life resources when few medical options remain.

But ensuring a hospice patient’s comfort and happiness can be tricky in a traditional hospital setting, according to Maria Lorenson, development director of Hospice of the Panhandle located in Jefferson and Berkeley counties.

Crowded medical settings often come with loud noises and fewer lifestyle supports, she said. But that’s where inpatient facilities come in.

Inpatient facilities like Hospice of the Panhandle’s campus in Kearneysville provide a residential health care setting.

Here, patients continue to receive support, but also experience a level of normalcy harder to access in a traditional hospital, Lorenson said.

“It’s very quiet, peaceful (and) serene.”

While Hospice of the Panhandle has operated since 1980, this year marks the 10th anniversary of its current inpatient facility. To celebrate, residents of West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle and beyond visited the campus Monday.

During the celebration, Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., delivered remarks regarding her parents’ history undergoing hospice care, as well as the importance of supporting end-of-life health care facilities. 

“This is a real soft spot for me, hospice care,” she said.

“The way to care for either life-ending illnesses or folks with dementia — or whatever the issue is — is something that I think all of us… will live,” Capito continued. “Every tender touch, every warm and friendly smile, every professional engagement is so absolutely important.”

Capito’s sentiments were echoed by Patti Maerten Hicks, whose husband, Dan, was admitted to the facility after receiving a pancreatic cancer diagnosis at age 47.

As her husband’s condition worsened, Maerten Hicks said that staff members volunteered to host an impromptu ceremony at the facility that would allow her husband to take part in their children’s high school graduation.

Maerten Hicks said that seeing facility staff and the local community rally around the ceremony brought joy to her husband and family during a particularly challenging period of time.

“Our family experience is just one story, one experience, that demonstrates how important the inpatient facility is to our community,” she said.

Lorenson said that operating an inpatient facility can be costly, which has limited the prevalence of inpatient care nationwide.

But residents can access hospice care using Medicare or Medicaid benefits, which prevents any financial burden from falling on the facility’s patients themselves, she said.

Plus, with the creation of the inpatient facility 10 years ago, Lorenson said that she and her colleagues feel they have enhanced medical resources available to the rural community surrounding the facility.

In a speech to the celebration’s guests, Hospice of the Panhandle CEO Nikki Bigiarelli said that the facility remains committed to continuing to serve residents like these in the years ahead.

Since opening 10 years ago, the inpatient facility — which can serve up to 14 individuals at a time — has admitted more than 3,000 patients for care, she said.

“I was born and raised here in the Panhandle, and taking care of our own people is very near and dear to my heart,” Bigiarelli said. “We’re going to continue to find ways to serve and take care of the deserving people of this Panhandle.”

Shepherd University Secures 3 Years Of Funding For Student Research

A new $160,000 grant from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission will fund three years of a student research program at Shepherd University in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle.

A new grant from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (HEPC) is furthering student research in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle.

The Shepherd Opportunity to Attract Research Students (SOARS) program pairs students with university faculty for summer research projects, providing them a stipend for their work.

A new HEPC grant of more than $160,000 will allow the program to continue for the next three years.

Participants in the program select a scientific research project they want to work on alongside a professor, receiving mentorship over the course of the summer.

At summer’s end, students have the opportunity to present their research. Later, they complete a capstone project from their findings.

This marks the fifth cycle of the SOARS program, which welcomes 30 students in each round of the grant.

“Students who are paid on the SOARS grant in the summer have extra hours and bits and pieces that they can do,” said Robert Warburton, dean of Shepherd’s College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Nursing, in a Monday press release.

“That means they get extra experience, and the faculty advisor gets assistants working in the lab, which is also important because the faculty must be able to do research because of their professional development requirements,” he said. “It’s a win on both sides.”

Rainfall Helps Contain Wildfires, But Problems Persist For Residents

Storms swept West Virginia on Tuesday, providing rainfall over wildfires in the eastern region of the state. Meanwhile, residents are still grappling with property damages on the ground.

Storms swept through West Virginia on Tuesday, knocking down trees and powerlines.

But the rainfall provided an unexpected benefit to communities in the Potomac Highlands and Eastern Panhandle: helping quash fires that have burned for days on end.

Emergency responders are continuing to monitor the region after extensive wildfires burned through more than 5,000 acres in late March.

All of the wildfires have since been contained, which means emergency responders have surrounded them to restrict their spread. But portions of the fire continue to burn, and smaller fires have popped up elsewhere in the state.

Now, the added rainfall has helped emergency responders gain further control over the wildfires, according to Assistant State Forester Linda Carnell.

“We’ve already got over an inch of rain,” she said. “Yes, there are hindrances to too much rain. But, in the long run, this will definitely help get the upper edge on all these fires.”

Still, Carnell said rainstorms are often followed by intense winds. That means residents should remain vigilant about fire safety protocol.

In the meantime, though, she said emergency responders are appreciative of the win.

“It’s a good thing. We’re happy for the rain,” Carnell said. “We definitely needed it.”

While the wildfires have been contained, damages continue to affect residents on the ground.

Paul Lewis serves as director of emergency management for Hardy County, one of the areas most affected by the fires. He said the fires have caused significant structural damage, and displaced some residents from their homes.

“We’ve had some houses lost and those people right now are in one of the shelters trying to find a place to relocate,” he said. “There’s at least two families there.”

In addition to homes, several cabins and outbuildings have been destroyed by the flames, he said.

While county officials continue to monitor the situation locally, Lewis said that residents have coordinated with relief organizations to access additional support.

For example, the Catholic Charities of West Virginia has provided resources to residents in need. The Hardy County 4-H Camp, located in Wardensville, has also served as a temporary relief shelter for some residents, he said.

Additionally, Lewis said residents facing damage to their places of residence can contact The American Red Cross of the Greater Shenandoah Valley for further support.

Lewis said the county is still collecting data on the extent of structural damages and further updates will be provided in future.

Artist Lea Craigie Retells Berkeley County History With New Mural

A new mural will be installed this spring at the Martinsburg Steam Laundry Building, to celebrate the 250-year anniversary of Berkeley County’s founding. Artist Lea Craigie is currently working on the project.

In 2022, Berkeley County celebrated its 250th anniversary. Now, the county is looking back at its history through a public art lens.

By early June, a mural will be on display in the heart of Martinsburg tracing the history and culture of Berkeley County over the years.

Reporter Jack Walker spoke with Lea Craigie, the artist behind the new mural, about her public art piece so far. Craigie grew up in Martinsburg and attended Shepherd University as an undergraduate.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Walker: To begin, could you tell me a little about the mural project you’re currently working on?

Craigie: Yes. So I was contacted by the 250th Commemoration Committee for Berkeley County to create a mural depicting a lot of the history that we don’t really necessarily learn about. A lot of it was very new to me, even though I did West Virginia history in school — and, you know, you learn a lot. A lot of the history that I dug up and found to include in the mural was history that I think a lot of people just won’t know about until they maybe go to the mural and start looking at all the details.

Walker: What are some of these aspects of history that you’re speaking about that are going to be featured in the mural?

Craigie: So a lot of the arts and the agriculture and things that we do know about in Berkeley County and we’re proud of are highlighted. But then also just hidden figures. So one of the panels of the portraits of people is Garland Lorenzo Wilson. And he was a jazz pianist in the 20s, an African American man who made it on his own. It’s just an amazing, inspiring story of a musician who made it. He ended up going to Paris and playing with all the jazz greats. So he is one of the portraits that’s highlighted, and he’s definitely somebody I never knew about before. I love unearthing figures, especially of people in history I just never got to know about.

And I just wanted to make sure I highlighted somebody that maybe we didn’t know about yet, who came from Martinsburg.

Walker: And I know that this is going to be a pretty massive display. Could you tell me a little bit about what went into the location of this mural, and then also what this mural will look like in terms of size and scale?

Craigie: The building that this will be located on is on Water Street in Martinsburg.

And it’ll be seven 10 foot-by-10 foot panels depicting the arts, the agriculture, the industry and figures and also, very importantly the airport. The airport was a really important hub for Berkeley County.

Walker: So it sounds like both in terms of the content of this mural and then also its placement very prominently in Martinsburg that this is something that’s kind of trying to very publicly state that these are pieces of Martinsburg history, and kind of honor things that are unspoken in terms of the Martinsburg narrative. Is that true to how you see this project?

Craigie: I believe it touches on every aspect of Berkeley County. I’ve worked very hard to make sure all parts of the community and all parts of the county were depicted in the mural. So in the industry panel, we have Musselman Apple. So every part of the county. I went from Hedgesville, to Musselman, you know, to all the different areas of the county. And actually the county at this point in history, it goes from the beginning of Berkeley County, to the end. So as you’re looking at the panels, the very first panel in the background of the arts panel, is the outline of Berkeley County as it was at the beginning. So Berkeley County actually went all the way to Berkeley Springs, which is why Berkeley Springs has its name, Berkeley Springs. And then it shows at the end panel on the industry panel, it will show the outline of Berkeley County, as it is today. So different boundaries, and then what those boundaries contained, and the history they contained, which is vast. And through every panel, at the bottom of every of the 10 foot panels, you’ll see a blue ribbon of mosaic tiles that actually represents the Opequon. And so the Opequon River runs through the entire county from start to finish. So it runs through my entire mural from start to finish. So it also shows the ecology of the county as well as the history.

Walker: And what’s the community response been like to this project so far?

Craigie: So far, wonderful. They released the press release. And the feedback has been great. And people, I think, are very surprised. And we’ve kept it very quiet until this moment.

Walker: As a closing question, I’m just curious: You’re someone who grew up in Martinsburg, grew up in Berkeley County. What does working on a project for your home county mean to you?

Craigie: It means so much. Personally speaking, it just means so much to be able to have this hanging in Martinsburg for years to come, decades to come. And to know that I was able to gift it to the community. I don’t see my murals as my art. It’s my gift to whatever community that art lives in. So to be able to gift my hometown community with my art is just — I don’t really have words. It’s very, very profound and exciting to me.
