Clifford visits West Virginia

Clifford The Big Red Dog, America’s favorite Big Red Dog,  made several recent appearances around the Mountain State.  He stopped at Avery Pre-School in Morgantown for a read aloud,  he met Governor Justice at the State Capitol Easter Egg Hunt, and finished off with a visit to Hundred Library in Wetzel County.

Clifford The Big Red Dog is larger-than-life dog and his best friend Emily Elizabeth will be back on PBS Kids this fall with new animated stories.

Clifford meets Governor Justice
Clifford meets a fan in Morgantown.

Based on the best-selling Scholastic book series by Norman Bridwell, Clifford has captured children’s imaginations for over 50 years. Clifford has always helped children understand their world and face challenges with kindness and understanding, life lessons he’ll continue to share in the new series.

The new Clifford The Big Red Dog series features an expanded world and bigger adventures, it also introduces all-new designs for main characters Clifford and Emily Elizabeth.  Although still set on Birdwell Island, Clifford The Big Red Dog will offer fresh and colorful new locations. The rebooted show will also have a strong emphasis on social-emotional skills such as empathy, along with a solid curriculum designed to boost early literacy and encourage imaginative play – teaching as it entertains with Clifford-sized humor.

Nature Nuggets

Bring science alive for the youngest of learners.  Nature Nuggets are short, minute-long videos drawn from NATURE, one of the most watched documentary film series on public television.  Included with these short videos are discussion questions and activities for students.

Nature Nuggets began as a new pilot campaign by WNET’s Education Department to test text-based technology as an effective community engagement technique. For this purpose, the minute-long videos from the NATURE series were repackaged for early learners (ages 2 to 6) and promoted as a tool for active science and language learning opportunities to parents, educators and caregivers across the nation.

Sid's Weather Adventure

Sid the Science Kid is about to head to Minnesota to celebrate the holidays with his family.  He is a reluctant traveler as he knows the weather will be cold and different from his home.  Sid, like any curious kid, with the help of his friends sets about exploring what temperature is and what it means.

Take your Pre-K to 1st grade scientists along on this adventure. Sid’s Holiday Adventure. In a series of 7 short clips (between 1-5 minutes) Sid and his gang follow the scientific inquiry process: the problem is identified, data is collected, hypotheses are made, experiments conducted, findings are recorded and published.  A simple approach to using this resource this is to introduce each section of the process with a clip from Sid and friends and then have your scientist follow along.  Keeping a science journal is fun and the students can report their findings to family just like Sid.

West Virginia LearningMedia is a limitless resources for STEM activities for every age.  Registration and resources are free.  Resources are searchable by grade level, content area and type of resource.  What are you waiting for- go explore.

These bilingual resources present universal coping strategies that help children feel safe and become more resilient in a range of situations, and give caring adults the tools they need to foster nurturing connections.

Slow Down and Settle Down is a packed one and a half minutes where Sesame’s Abby Cadabby let’s us know when we are anxious we need to Slow Down to Settle Down.  Good advice at any age.   Sesame in Communities offers resources for parents and care givers.
