Also, in this show, our Mountain Stage Song of the Week is “Willie Mays Is Up At Bat,” which comes from Chuck Prophet’s undeniably catchy 2012 album Temple Beautiful. This performance also marked Prophet’s tenth appearance on the show. To celebrate this momentous occasion, like all of our “tenth timers,” Prophet was awarded an official Mountain Stage jacket with “Chuck” stitched across the front pocket.

Listen: Chuck Prophet Has the Mountain Stage Song of the Week

This week we’re looking back to a 2010 episode we recorded at the Clay Center as voted on by our listeners.

Mountain Stage this week looks back to a 2010 episode that we recorded at The Clay Center in Charleston, W.Va. with Ani DiFranco, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Andy McKee, Erin McKeown and Chuck Prophet.

San Francisco band leader and journeyman rocker Chuck Prophet performed songs from his album ¡Let Freedom Ring!, recorded, coincidentally, during the early onset of the H1N1 virus, in Mexico City, Mexico in 2009. Prophet and his band wore their masks to the studio, all the while enduring the regular power-outages common in the area resulting in multiple lost takes.

Our Song of the Week, “Hot Talk.” is a breezy and cryptic jaunt that captures the immediacy and the chaos of the album.

Listen: Kim Richey On Mountain Stage

Our Song of the Week comes from acclaimed Nashville singer and songwriter Kim Richey, along with her band and San Francisco’s Chuck Prophet, who was a guest on this episode and also appears on Richey’s new album “Edgeland.” Here’s their duet, “Whistle On Occasion.”

We also shot a video of Kim and Chuck performing “Whistle On Occasion” on location at the state capitol grounds in Charleston, WV. You can see the video below via VuHaus.com.

Mountain Stage After Midnight- September 27 & 28

2007 was a great year: the final “Harry Potter” book was released, we were introduced to some plucky teenagers in “Juno,” Steve Jobs made an announcement about something called an iPhone, and Mountain Stage Radio Show featured some top notch perfomers, as we’ll hear on this week’s “Mountain Stage After Midnight.” Broadcast from 1am-5am Saturday and Sunday mornings here on West Virginia Public Radio, “Mountain Stage After Midnight” takes the best episodes from the show’s 31 year history and shares their memories and songs with our late-night listeners. Each week we’ll hand-pick two of our favorite episodes and they’ll alternate order each night.

Tune your dials to West Virginia Public Radio this Saturday September 27 and Sunday September 28 for some great performances on “Mountain Stage After Midnight.”

First you’ll hear a 2007 performance from punk rock icon John Doe, American pop-folk songwriter Luke Temple, country-punk singer Sarah Borges, legendary roots-rocker Chuck Prophet (who just released a new record, “Night Surfer,” this past week), and Afropop-by-way-of-Berlin artist Zap Mama.
