With loud music and colorful fireworks, Fourth of July celebrations are all about bright lights, big sounds, huge crowds – and for many folks, that’s all part of the fun.
But what about those who don’t enjoy the sights and sounds?
Organizers say West Virginia’s America250 celebration will have something for everyone – including those with sensory sensitivities.
“We know that some folks are having sensitivities to large crowds, or bright lights, or loud sounds, whether that is for medical reasons or just personal reasons,” Lindsey Funk with the state’s Department of Tourism, said. “We just wanted to offer activities so guests of all kinds are still able to come and celebrate with us and enjoy the weekend.”
A sensory friendly hour will take place on the America 250 Wheel from 9-10 a.m. on Friday – featuring reduced lighting effects, softer sounds and smaller crowds.
The Culture Center library will also serve as a sensory-friendly area.
“This will just be a great place for guests to slow down,” Funk said. “There will be comfortable seating, coloring pages, toys for children, some giveaway items, some calming music, and calming lights, for folks that have sensory sensitivities.”
The sensory center will be open Thursday, July 2, 5-7 p.m. and Friday, July 3 through Sunday, July 5, 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
