I-77 Bridge a First in West Virginia; Construction Underway

A bridge that’s replacing an existing one on Interstate 77 in Ghent is the first of its kind in West Virginia.

Bala Sivakumar, vice president of HNTB, the company overseeing the project, tells The Register-Herald that construction started Sunday. It’s expected to finish Saturday.

The project is using Accelerated Bridge Construction to replace the two-lane bridge deck on northbound I-77 over Route 48.

In ABC, workers assemble pre-cast elements at the side of the existing bridge, while crews build a new superstructure underneath the existing bridge. The pre-cast elements are then moved into place using a lateral slide method.

Crews work around the clock until the bridge is completed in days.

HNTB spokesman Randy Epperly says over 100 ABC projects are expected on the West Virginia Turnpike in the future.

Jury to Decide Contaminated Wells Case Against Coal Company

A jury in West Virginia will decide whether a coal company owned by Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jim Justice contaminated the drinking water wells of residents in Wyoming County.

Local media outlets report the jury is scheduled to begin deliberations Thursday in the case against Justice-controlled companies Dynamic Energy Inc. and Mechel Bluestone Inc.

Fifteen families who live near Dynamic Energy’s surface mining complex at Coal Mountain say the operation contaminated their wells to the point that the water is no longer safe to drink.

If the jury rules in their favor, the families could seek a court order to force the companies to provide long-term treatment to clean up their wells.

During the trial, Billy Shelton, a lawyer for Dynamic Energy and Mechel Bluestone, told jurors the residents had no case.

New Cab Mode of Public Transit to be Unveiled in Charleston

Officials are planning to unveil a new mode of public transportation in downtown Charleston.

Tourism officials say they plan a news conference Friday. In attendance will be the chief executive officer of Pittsburgh-based Autopods, which operates a fleet of small cabs. They are powered by foot pedals with electric batteries for use on hills.

According to Autopods’ website, the service charges a flat fare for the general public and can be booked for special events such as weddings and festivals. The vehicles are intended for short trips.

A news conference that was set for Thursday at Haddad Riverfront Park was postponed due to other events involving presidential politics in the city.
