Charleston's Annual Urban Deer Hunt Sets Records

Charleston’s annual urban deer hunt has set record numbers this season.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports that the hunt saw its largest kill to date this season. According to City Manager David Molgaard, of the 105 deer killed between Sept. 2 and December, 85 were does and 23 were bucks.

Molgaard says the high doe kill would likely affect future deer populations in the city since does typically have two fawns each season.

One hundred deer were killed in both 2014 and 2013.

Molgaard says the number of hunting permits also increased from 150 in 2014 to 166 this season.

Just two of the 26 approved property tracts are city-owned. The rest were designated on private property within the city limits.

Officials: Urban Deer Hunts a Success

A state wildlife official says urban deer hunts have succeeded at thinning local whitetail populations.

Division of Natural Resources wildlife chief Paul Johansen tells the Charleston Gazette-Mail that the hunts don’t necessarily solve a city or town’s deer problems. But he says the hunts help achieve that goal.

State-sanctioned urban archery hunts in municipalities began in 1996 as a way to reduce deer populations and damage. Eleven municipalities now have urban hunting seasons.

The state extended the hunts to homeowner associations in 2001.

Johansen says urban hunts offer several incentives to increase their popularity among hunters.

Urban hunting seasons open 14 days before the regular archery seasons. They have a seven-deer bag limit that doesn’t count against a hunter’s regular seasonal bag limits.

Hunters Outnumber Deer Killed At Bridgeport Urban Hunt

Bridgeport’s urban deer hunt last year had more than twice as many bow hunters as the number of deer killed.

Bridgeport Deputy Police Chief Randy Hartley says 118 hunters killed 52 deer within city limits during the 2014 hunt.

The program started in 2009 as a way to help reduce the city’s deer population. The 2012 hunt saw the highest number of deer killed with 107.

The Exponent Telegram reports the city’s urban deer hunt this year will run from Sept. 12 to Dec. 31. Permits are free but hunters must attend a training session this summer.

Hunters Kill 105 Deer During Morgantown's 2014 Urban Hunt

Hunters killed fewer deer during Morgantown’s 2014 urban archery hunt than they did the previous year.

The city said Thursday that 105 deer were killed during the four-month hunt that ended Dec. 31. That’s down from 137 deer killed in 2013.

Local shelters and kitchens received 853 pounds of ground venison from 35 deer donated during the 2014 hunt.

Registration for a lottery for new hunters will begin March 1 and run through March 31.
