This modern jazz concert celebrates holiday favorites, new and old, performed by WV Music Hall of Fame member Thompson and his band, Doug Payne on saxophone, Timothy Courts on drums, Ryan Kennedy on guitar and John Inghram on bass. Platinum selling vocalist Paula Cole, known for her hits “I Don’t Want to Wait,” and “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone,” will be the featured vocalist. Her most recent release “Ballads”, a twenty-song collection of American jazz and folk classics from the 1930’s to the 1960’s, finds her paying homage to her first love of jazz and folk music.

Cole’s compositions have been covered by a diverse range of artists (jazz legend Herbie Hancock, Annie Lennox, Katherine McPhee, JoJo, hip-hop duo THEY), she has sold approximately three million albums, performed with icons such as Peter Gabriel, Dolly Parton, Herbie Hancock, Emmylou Harris; Amy Lee of Evanescence, Burt Bacharach, Counting Crows, Matchbox 20, and currently has over four hundred thousand monthly listeners on Spotify.

Paula Cole has collaborated with artists like Chris Botti, Peter Gabriel and Sarah Mclachlan, she is the voice behind Peter Gabriel’s “Secret World Live”, smash hits “Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?”, “I Don’t Want To Wait”, and the brave, brazen double platinum album, “This Fire”.  Now, she takes us from “Billie Holiday and Bob Dylan, to John Coltrane and Nina Simone, to Bobbie Gentry and Nancy Wilson,” with her latest album of classic folk, jazz and pop standards called “Ballads.”

Four musicians, educators and collaborators comprise the multi-national sounds of LADAMA. The group’s “Porro Maracutu” was hand-picked by Mountain Stage producers for NPR’s Heavy Rotation, and earlier this week the group performed on ESPN2 as part of their TV special “Nación ESPN: The Latino Experience.”

Their self-titled debut release, is out now on Six Degrees Records.

Ohio’s own Angela Perley & the Howlin’ Moons have made quite the name for themselves with buzz-worthy live-performances, so it’s no wonder the band was named “#1 Local Band” in Columbus Alive’s 2017 Reader’s Poll.

LIVE SHOW NEWS: Mountain Stage Returns to Athens, OH Oct. 15

Mountain Stage has a busy fall schedule filled with exciting, emerging talent, and fresh, new material from some of music’s most endearing voices.

The lineup is coming together for the show’s return to Memorial Auditorium in Athens, OH on Sunday October 15, with the help of our affiliate WOUB and the team at OU Performing Arts. We’ll hear from two of pop and rock music’s most recognizable names, both of whom have continued to reinvent and re-imagine their creative output throughout their careers.

Lay It On Down” is the latest release from guitar-rock mainstay Kenny Wayne Shepherd and his band – longtime vocalist Noah Hunt, drummer Chris “Whipper” Layton (renowned for his prior work with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble), veteran bassist Kevin McCormick and keyboardist Joe Krown. The record’s ten original songs explore some vital new creative territory while embodying the same rootsy musicality that’s been a common thread in the nine acclaimed albums that Shepherd’s released since he first emerged as a teenaged guitar wunderkind nearly a quarter-century ago.

Paula Cole has made three appearances on Mountain Stage since 1994. She returns for the fourth time October 15 in Athens, OH.

Paula Cole’s voice is committed to memory thanks to the opening moments of “Dawson’s Creek,” but since then she has continued to evolve her music, most recently with “Ballads,” featuring classic American jazz and folk songs from the 1930s-1960s. “Ballads” is a journey to Billie Holiday and Bob Dylan, to John Coltrane and Nina Simone, to Bobbie Gentry and Nancy Wilson, sung by Cole’s immensely soulful voice. Her compositions have been covered by a diverse range of artists; jazz legend Herbie Hancock, Annie Lennox, Katherine McPhee, JoJo, hip-hop duo THEY. She has sold approximately three million albums, performed with icons such as Peter Gabriel, Dolly Parton, Herbie Hancock, Emmylou Harris; Amy Lee of Evanescence, Burt Bacharach, Counting Crows and Matchbox 20. October 15 will mark Cole’s fourth appearance on Mountain Stage since 1994.

Also scheduled to appear on October 15 in Athens, OH is the multi-national group LADAMA.  LADAMA is an ensemble of women musicians from across the Americas who, as well as performing as an internationally touring band, strive to engage youth in their respective communities in the process of music-making, composition and audio production through collaboration and performance workshops.

Tickets for October 15 are available online, by phone (740-593-1780), and at the Memorial Auditorium Box Office. Doors open at 6:30p.m. and the show starts at 7p.m. See the entire list of upcoming Mountain Stage shows here.  Mountain Stage Members who make a sustaining gift get exclusive pre-sale access to our Culture Center shows before tickets are available to the public.
