Saints Aid Flood Recovery Near West Virginia Training Camp

The New Orleans Saints have spent much of their first full day in West Virginia helping the community where they’re opening training camp recover from disastrous flooding.

Much of the Saints’ efforts were focused on a park where there are playing fields, public tennis and basketball courts, and a playground.

Right tackle Zach Strief says, “If any organization understands what it means to clean up from a natural disaster,” it’s the Saints, who played a significant role in helping New Orleans recover after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005.

The Saints are in their third year holding training camp at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs. They’re slated to start practicing Thursday.

Flooding in late June killed 23 people in West Virginia, including 15 in Greenbrier County, while damaging numerous structures.

Saints to Keep Training Camp in West Virginia Despite Floods

The New Orleans Saints are planning to keep their training camp in West Virginia after recent flooding in the state killed at least 23 people.

The team says in a statement it has been in contact with officials at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs and it still plans to hold training camp at the facility beginning on July 27.

In Monday night’s statement attributed to team executives Dennis Lauscha and Mickey Loomis, the Saints say they “will continue to monitor the situation and look for ways that our team/organization can contribute in a positive way while we are there this summer.”

The team also says it is working with United Way to provide assistance for victims of the flooding.

Saints Coach Payton on Hand for W.Va. Bill Signing

While visiting the West Virginia Capitol, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton praised his team’s plans to move some of its training camp to The Greenbrier.

Payton was on hand Thursday as Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin signed a tourism bill. The Greenbrier’s training camp and a new medical facility would benefit from the law’s tax credits.

Greenbrier owner Jim Justice estimated the Saints would train at the White Sulphur Springs resort from July 18 to Aug. 16. Admission will be free.

Justice said building new football training grounds will cost $20 million to $25 million.

The medical center tax breaks could total up to $25 million over 10 years. The $86 million facility will likely open next year. Justice said he expects to draw top doctors for professional athletes.

The Gridiron Is Coming to The Greenbrier

The New Orleans Saints announced Thursday they will be using the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs for part of its 2014 training camp.

General Manager of the Saints Mickey Loomis says the team wants to take advantage of a more moderate climate and setting in West Virginia. It will still spend some time training in New Orleans.

The Saints won a Super Bowl a few years ago under head coach Sean Payton.
