LISTEN: Ed Snodderly Has The Mountain Stage Song Of The Week

This week, our spring broadcast season continues with a new episode of Mountain Stage featuring guest host David Mayfield. Joining us is Virginia Bluegrass band Nothin’ Fancy, 10-time International Bluegrass Music Association Bass Player of the Year Missy Raines & Allegheny, acoustic blues guitarist Rory Block, singer-songwriter and guitarist Ed Snodderly, and multi-instrumentalist folk artist Meredith Moon.

Joining us is 10-time International Bluegrass Music Association Bass Player of the Year Missy Raines & Allegheny, Shenandoah Valley bluegrass band Nothin’ Fancy, acoustic blues guitarist Rory Block, singer-songwriter and guitarist Ed Snodderly, and multi-instrumentalist folk artist Meredith Moon.

Our Mountain Stage Song of the Week comes from Ed Snodderly, whose songs have been recorded by some of roots music’s most well-known names, including Sam Bush, Missy Raines, Jerry Douglas, and more. Our Song of the Week is Snodderly’s performance of “Gone with Gone and Long Time,” accompanied by the Mountain Stage Band and Lisa Pattison on fiddle and vocals.

On this week’s premiere broadcast of Mountain Stage, host Kathy Mattea welcomes Sarah Jarosz, Tim O’Brien Band, Karan Casey Trio, Dirk & Amelia Powell, and The Tin Men. On this episode, we celebrate Tim O’Brien’s 70th birthday and an impressive 50 years of making some of the best bluegrass music out there.

On this week’s premiere broadcast of Mountain Stage, host Kathy Mattea welcomes four-time GRAMMY winner Sarah Jarosz, bluegrass master Tim O’Brien and his all-star Band, Irish folk singer-songwriter Karan Casey and her trio, father-daughter duo Dirk & Amelia Powell, and New Orleans’ premier sousaphone, washboard and guitar trio, The Tin Men.

This special episode is a celebration of Tim O’Brien’s 70th birthday and an impressive 50 years of making some of the best roots music in the business.

Our Song of the Week is from Sarah Jarosz, the singer-songwriter who has grown from instrumental prodigy to fully realized artist. In her third appearance on Mountain Stage this week, Jarosz performs a collection of songs from her new release, Polaroid Lovers, including our Song of the Week- “Good at What I Do”- which recently reached #1 on the Americana Radio charts.

Our Song of the Week is an acoustic rendition of the international hit, “Down Under,” performed by Colin Hay. Originally heard on Men at Work’s 1981 debut album, Business as Usual, “Down Under” was written by the group’s co-founders, Colin Hay and Ron Strykert.

Our Song of the Week is “Jim Devlin,” which comes from acoustic toe-tapping group Buffalo Wabs & The Price Hill Hustle. The song is about Louisville Grays pitcher Jim Devlin, who was an accomplished hitter and pitcher in the late 1800s, and the first pitcher to use the drop ball or “sinker” in baseball.

This episode was recorded on Dec. 10, 2023 at the Culture Center Theater in Charleston, West Virginia with host Kathy Mattea, James McMurtry, Suzzy Roche & Lucy Wainright Roche, John Doyle & Mick McAuley, Tommy Prine, Cheryl Wheeler & Kenny White, and a special appearance from West Virginia Poet Laureate Marc Harshman.

On this week’s premiere broadcast of Mountain Stage, we hear the second part of our 40th anniversary celebration. This episode was recorded on Dec. 10, 2023 at the Culture Center Theater in Charleston, West Virginia with host Kathy Mattea, James McMurtry, Suzzy Roche & Lucy Wainwright Roche, John Doyle & Mick McAuley, Tommy Prine, Cheryl Wheeler & Kenny White and a special appearance from West Virginia Poet Laureate Marc Harshman.

With two nights of music, there was no shortage of memories being shared on stage and behind the scenes making for a memorable night honoring the legacy of the show.

Our Song of the Week is “Painting by Numbers” by James McMurtry, which appears on his album Too Long In The Wasteland. That album was released in 1989, the same year that McMurtry performed on Mountain Stage for the first time. Over the next three decades, he joined us 14 more times for some truly unforgettable performances.

On this week’s premiere broadcast of Mountain Stage, we hear the first of two episodes celebrating our 40th anniversary. This episode was recorded on Dec. 3, 2023 at the Culture Center Theater in Charleston, West Virginia with host Kathy Mattea, Joan Osborne, Nellie McKay, Jake Kohn, Todd Burge and a special appearance from West Virginia Poet Laureate Marc Harshman.

To celebrate this landmark year, Mountain Stage recorded not one, but two anniversary shows commemorating four decades as the home of live music on public radio, making it the second longest running nationally distributed performance radio show.

Our Song of the Week comes from singer songwriter Nellie McKay, whose music incorporates many different styles infused with her zany and profound interpretations of life.

The Mountain Stage Song of the Week is “Drinking Song” from Nellie’s first album of original material in 13 years, Hey Guys, Watch This. Joining her on the album, and in this special performance, are The Carpenter Ants, West Virginia’s favorite rhythm and blues group which features Mountain Stage Band guitarist Michael Lipton, bassist Ted Harrison, drummer/vocalist Jupie Little and keyboardist/vocalist Mark Bates.
