A throwback to classic southern soul music from a modern-day band, our Song of the Week comes from Alabama’s St. Paul & the Broken Bones. Making their second appearance on Mountain Stage with songs from the highly acclaimed second full-length album “Sea of Noise,” here’s “Flow With It.”
This week’s show also features performances from songwriting and guitar great Mac McAnally, alt-rockers The Wild Reeds, jazzy-soul songwriter Chastity Brown and the immensely gifted singer and songwriter Sarah Siskind.

Next we will hear The Wild Reeds, fresh off an appearance at this year’s Newport Folk Festival. Built around the vocals of Kinsey Lee, Sharon Silva and Mackenzie Howe, The Wild Reeds are supporting their latest release for Dualtone records, “The World We Built.” The hour will end with the genre-spanning sounds of Minneapolis-based singer, songwriter and instrumentalist Chastity Brown, who we first met while hanging around at the Gun Flint Tavern in Grand Marais, MN. Her latest, “Silhouettes of Sirens” is out now on Red House Records.
The second hour of the program will begin with a set from Singer-Songwriter Hall of Fame member Mac McAnally, who is taking a break as the guitarist in Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band to appear on Mountain Stage for the third time. Mac’s latest release, “Southbound,” is due August 25 and is the first of his 14 albums to present all-original material in McAnally’s newly arranged orchestral context.
Mac McAnally made his first appearance on Mountain Stage in 1989. His latest, “Southbound,” features his songs performed with an orchestra.
After our pianist Bob Thompson’s featured song, we will welcome back St. Paul and The Broken Bones who have been a tour de force of modern soul influenced rock and R&B. Their latest, “Sea of Noise” was released last September. The band is just back from a European tour.

Wainwright has been coming to Mountain Stage since 1988 and has a new record called “Haven’t Got the Blues (Yet)”. Nancy And Beth were just featured on NPR ‘s All Things Considered and you can read Mullally’s recent interview with the Charleston Gazette-Mail.
On sale Friday, May 5 at 10a.m. are three Mountain Stage events scheduled for July. The show will mark 900 episodes on Sunday July 16 at the Culture Center when they welcome Steve Earle & The Dukes, with songs from Earle’s forthcoming “So You Wanna Be An Outlaw”. Also on sale Friday are July 23 with Okkervil River and July 30 featuring St. Paul & The Broken Bones and 8 time CMA Musician of the year, Mac McAnally.
Lest we forget, Mountain Stage will record two shows in June, starting Sunday June 4 at the Culture Center with iconic Canadian songwriter and guitarist Bruce Cockburn, Minnesota based alt-folkies The Pines, and just announced, American Music Club leader and songwriter Mark Eitzel.

Tyler Childers will make his second appearance on Mountain Stage Sunday June 25 as part of FestivALL Charleston. Childers’ new album will be due later this year.
On Sunday June 25 Mountain Stage welcomes assistant producer Joni Deutsch back to the host’s microphone for a special FestivALL Charleston edition of the show with soul-rockers Marcus King Band, arty indie-rocker Kishi Bashi and adopted WV-son Tyler Childers, among others.

Steve Earle & The Dukes, Okkervil River and St. Paul & The Broken Bones are among the artists scheduled to appear as the long running radio show Mountain Stage w/ Larry Groce records episodes #900, #901 and #902 at the Culture Center Theater on the State Capitol Grounds.

The show will record its landmark 900th episode on Sunday, July 16 with Steve Earle & the Dukes. The band will be touring in support of Earle’s forthcoming album “So You Wanna Be an Outlaw”. The Mastersons, who are also a part of The Dukes, will join the line-up as well.
Indie-folk rockers Okkervil River, led by songwriter and singer Will Sheff, will make their first appearance on Mountain Stage Sunday July 23 with songs from 2016’s “Away.”

Like many of the most beloved artists who perform on Mountain Stage, singer-songwriter and guitarist Mac McAnally may not be a household name, but his music might as well be. Here he performs his ode to his home state of Mississippi, “Back Where I Come From,” which became a hit single for country superstar Kenny Chesney.
2015 was a big year for Mountain Stage. We began a beautiful friendship with public radio music discovery machine VuHaus. We created a new, bite-size podcast called Mountain Stage 2 Go.
