Mountain East Conference Tournament to Stay in Charleston

A new agreement will keep the Mountain East Conference’s annual basketball tournaments in Charleston through 2017.

The agreement between the City of Charleston, the Charleston Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and the Charleston Civics Center will keep both the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments in the capital city for the next three years.

MEC Commissioner Reid Amos said in a release the tournament had a successful inaugural year and the agreement to stay in Charleston allows the conference to continue to build on that positive momentum.

During the Mountain East Conference’s first season last year, three men’s and three women’s teams earned bids to the NCAA Division II Tournament. West Liberty’s men’s team played for the national championship.

The conference consists of 12 schools in three states and sponsors 17 championships.

Race Organizers May Face Fee in Charleston

Race organizers could soon have to pay fees to the city of Charleston for holding their event within city limits.

The Charleston Gazette reports the city’s parks and recreation committee passed a bill outlining rules for the fees last night.

Several racing groups and charity organizations have spoken out against the bill, which calls for fees that range from 500 to a thousand dollars for 5 and 10K racecourses. The bill still needs the approval of city council.

The idea behind the bill is to help the city recoup costs associated with the races, but nonprofit organizations could receive a 50 percent discount on their fees if they list the City of Charleston as an event sponsor.

Fees for established courses are expected to be published by October 1st.

Charleston Targets Gun Group Over New Firearms Law

The city of Charleston is targeting a gun rights group to get court clarification on allowing firearms in some city recreational facilities.

The city amended its motion Monday by naming the state Citizens Defense League as a defendant.

Attorney General Patrick Morrisey wanted Charleston’s initial request in Kanawha County Circuit Court dismissed, saying it sued no one.

Last year, the league sued the city over gun ordinances. It adjusted the lawsuit after a new law passed this year.

The law allows concealed carry permit owners bring guns to city rec facilities, like swimming pools and after-school centers. Guns must be out of people’s sight and access.

The city argues bringing guns to school grounds or school event locations is a felony, so some city venues should be shielded.

This Sunday, May 18th, you are in for a treat.

Do you sing in a choir? Like choral music? Do you like heavenly music set to exquisite poetry?

Eleanor Daley, one the most prolific and best-known choral composers, is coming to Charleston as part of the Charleston Civic Chorus’ Spring Concert. She has an international reputation as her music is performed and sold all over the world.

I could just say her music is heavenly, blissful, subtle and profound, but that might not translate to readers.

"For me, the text, the poetry, is what brings the music alive. The words are of utmost  importance."

Eleanor’s sensitive setting of the texts, the clarity and focus of the direction of the music, and the care and economy of every note might be a fair summing up of her style.
