W.Va. Boy Scout Council Breaks Ground on New Center

A West Virginia-based Boy Scouts of America council has broken ground for a new $3.7 million leadership center.

The Buckskin Council’s 13,000-square-foot center in Charleston will be named in honor of H. Bernard Werhle Sr., a philanthropist recognized by the organization as “West Virginia’s first Boy Scout.”

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports that the center will include museum displays, conference rooms, a scout shop and other amenities. It will incorporate the council’s existing building.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Tuesday.

The Buckskin Council serves 22 counties in West Virginia, four counties in Kentucky and three counties in both Virginia and Ohio.

Boy Scouts OK Merger of Two W.Va.-Based Councils

  A merger of two West Virginia-based Boy Scouts of America councils has received the national organization’s approval.

The merger combines the Charleston-based Buckskin Council and the Huntington-based Tri-State Area Council. The new council serves about 7,000 scouts in 32 counties in West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia and Ohio.

Jeff Purdy with the Buckskin Council tells the Charleston Gazette that national Boy Scout leaders approved the merger on July 1. He says the new council will retain the Buckskin Council name.

Members of the Huntington-based Tri-State Area Council and the Charleston-based Buckskin Council will vote on whether to approve the merger on May 29.
 
Tri-State Area Council serves parts of West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky. Buckskin Council serves the majority of West Virginia, and parts of Virginia and Kentucky.
 
Tri-State Area Council president John R. VanHorn tells The Herald-Dispatch that his group’s fundraising has declined. He says the merger will provide scouts with more opportunities, and more resources will be available for camp improvements and maintenance.
 
The new council would begin operations July 1, if the merger is approved by the councils’ members and the national organization.
