When Bahamas first appeared on Mountain Stage a few years ago, they stole the show with their infectious mix of folk-influenced harmonies and indie rock hooks. Since then, they’ve received much deserved mainstream recognition, thanks in no small part to the song “All the Time in the World,” which was heavily featured in a television ad campaign starring James Franco. They perform the song live on this week’s broadcast of Mountain Stage.
2015 was a big year for Mountain Stage. We began a beautiful friendship with public radio music discovery machine VuHaus. We created a new, bite-size podcast called Mountain Stage 2 Go.
And across nine venues in four states, we recorded over 100 live sets that showcased the best and brightest musicians in the world today. (Of course, none of this would have happened without your support!)
Before we embark on our 33rd musical year around the sun, Larry Groce and the Mountain Stage crew have picked out 27 performances that deserve another listen and another round of applause. From A to Z, these are our favorite Mountain Stage performances of 2015. (Hint: click the Episode # for their Mountain Stage podcast episode, where available.)

This weekend, Bahamas returns to over 150 NPR stations with his recent performance on the Mountain Stage. But do you know what’s better than one dose of Canadian folk pop-rock? Two doses of Canadian folk pop-rock. That’s where “Mountain Stage After Midnight” comes into play.
Broadcast from 1am-5am Saturday and Sunday mornings here on West Virginia Public Broadcasting, “Mountain Stage After Midnight” takes the best episodes from the show’s 32 year history and shares their memories and songs with our late-night listeners. Each week we’ll hand-pick two of our favorite episodes and they’ll alternate order each night.
Tune in for some great 2013 performances that will air Saturday September 12 and Sunday September 13 on “Mountain Stage After Midnight.”
First you’ll hear a January 2013 performance from London-by-way-of-Kansas singer Piney Gir, indie rocker Bahamas, alt-country troubadour Bonnie Prince Billy, surrealist folk group Camper Van Beethoven, and indie Tex-Mex collective Calexico.
Next a February 2013 performance featuring Americana singer-songwriter Bonnie Bishop, alt-country duo Shovels & Rope, country-pop singer Kim Richey, Canandian chanteuse Kathleen Edwards, and West Virginia’s own Kathy Mattea.

This week, “A Change of Tune” host Joni Deutsch interviews Bahamas, the pseudonym for singer-songwriter Afie Jurvanen. Although Bahamas is far from being Bahamian (hint: Jurvanen hails from the non-Caribbean lands of Canada), his effortlessly beautiful folk will make you believe you’re surrounded by sun and sand. Check out the interview below to hear more about Bahamas’ new record, his Finnish-Canadian upbringing, and his views on identity and mainstream music. If you’re a fan of warm, laid-back folk in the same vein as Jack Johnson, this interview and music are recommended for you.
Bahamas just released “Bahamas is Afie” this past August and will continue touring this fall. Although Bahamas isn’t due to stop by West Virginia, you can check out his 2013 set in Charleston on Mountain Stage Radio Show and keep up with him on his website and Facebook. You can listen to Bahamas’ new music on Joni Deutsch’s “A Change of Tune” this Saturday at 10 PM EST on West Virginia Public Radio.
