West Virginia is about to play host to the first Spartan Trifecta World Championship to ever take place on U.S. soil.

The Trifecta will be held at the 14,000 acre Summit Bechtel Reserve in Glen Jean and is expected to bring 8,000 athletes from more than 30 countries to the state, some of them top athletes from around the world.

There’s the 5K Sprint, the 10K Super and the 21K Beast. Elite athletes compete in all three races the same weekend.

“West Virginia’s terrain doesn’t care who you are — it’ll show you that you’re capable of far more than you ever imagined,” said Spartan Founder and CEO Joe De Sena in a press release. “This is where Spartans from around the world come to earn their place in history — one obstacle at a time.”

The Summit Bechtel Reserve’s Ryan King says the events are intense.

Each one of those races you’ll have a certain amount of obstacles you’re gonna have to go through, that are gonna be those physical challenges – wet areas you’re gonna have to go through, bucket challenges where you’re carrying buckets filled with rocks in ‘em, just all kinds of physical challenges,” King said.

The Trifecta takes place Sept. 6 and 7.
