This week’s broadcast of Mountain Stage features a highly danceable set from vocalist Victoria Victoria, who brought along jazz-giant Charlie Hunter on guitar, performing songs from her new album Wayside for the live audience in Charleston, West Virginia. We’ll also hear from indie-art folk rocker Cass McCombs, bassist and songwriter Scott Mulvahill, Toronto-based songwriter Julianna Riolino, and California’s Steady Holiday.

Victoria Victoria is the North Carolina based brainchild of singer-songwriter-producer Tori Elliott. Our Song of the Week is the plaintive “Hardware Store,” where the subject roams the isles of the hardware store in anticipation of seeing a lost love-interest.

Our Song of the Week comes from West Virginia native, singer, songwriter, fiddler, and Tiktok sensation, Philip Bowen. Bowen has been named TikTok’s Gamers Greatest Talent, and he’s approaching one million followers on the platform.

While he’s beloved on the web for his fiddling covers of popular songs, his original song “The Old Kanawha,” is our Mountain Stage Song of the Week.

Bowen has a song being released this weekend, “Sweet, Honey,” the first single off his upcoming debut album.

LISTEN: Bela Fleck Has The Mountain Stage Song Of The Week

Mountain Stage officially kicks off our 40th Broadcast Season this week with our 39th anniversary celebration featuring Bela Fleck My Bluegrass Heart, The Brother Brothers, Alice Howe with Freebo, The Bing Brother feat. Jake Krack, and a special appearance from West Virginia’s Poet Laureate Marc Harshman.

Mountain Stage officially kicks off our 40th Broadcast Season this week with our 39th anniversary celebration featuring Bela Fleck My Bluegrass Heart, The Brother Brothers, Alice Howe with Freebo, The Bing Brothers featuring Jake Krack, and a special appearance from West Virginia’s Poet Laureate Marc Harshman.

By our best count, Bela Fleck has appeared on Mountain Stage more than 15 times, including trips with his wife Abigail Washburn, alongside his band The Flecktones, small group performances with Edgar Myer, Zakir Hussain, Chris Thile, and his very first which occurred in 1989 as a member of New Grass Revival.

His most recent appearance is perhaps the most star-studded yet. Bela Fleck My Bluegrass Heart features Fleck on banjo with Sierra Hull on mandolin, Michael Cleveland on fiddle, bassist Mark Schatz, multi-instrumentalist Justin Moses, and guitarist Bryan Sutton. The corresponding album My Bluegrass Heart won top honors in the Bluegrass Album category at the 2022 Grammy awards.

Our Song of the Week is the opening track on that album, “Vertigo,” performed live on Mountain Stage.

Our Song of the Week is McKay’s performance of “No Equality,” which appeared originally on her 2010 album Home Sweet Mobile Home.

Join us this weekend for Mountain Stage as Kathy Mattea welcomes back Sarah Harmer, who has her first new album in 10 years. We’ll also hear from Ohio roots-folk artist Arlo McKinley, old-time acoustic set from Buffalo Wabs & the Price Hill Hustle, plus songwriter Taylor Rae and West Virginia bassist, singer and songwriter John Inghram and his band.

This week’s episode of Mountain Stage features performances from Canadian songwriter and activist Sarah Harmer, who has her first new album in 10 years out now. We also hear from Ohio-based country folk artist Arlo McKinley, a fun acoustic performance from Buffalo Wabs & the Price Hill Hustle, bassist and songwriter John Inghram performs a set with his band, plus emerging Austin-based songwriter Taylor Rae.

Our Song of the Week is by bassist, songwriter and vocalist John Inghram, who has appeared on Mountain Stage alongside several artists over the years. He steps out as the front man and songwriter for his own band on this week’s show. John’s self-titled debut album, released in May 2022, features the single “Palisades,” which we’ve chosen as our Song of the Week.

Joining Inghram is guitarist Bud Carroll, drummer Andrew Gillum and keyboardist Brad Goodall.

Listen: Maia Sharp Has The Mountain Stage Song Of The Week, ‘Whatever We Are’

This week’s broadcast was recorded on the campus of Ohio University with the help of our affiliate WOUB Public Media. We’ll hear performances from Rissi Palmer, Cheryl Wheeler, Joslyn & the Sweet Compression, Maia Sharp, and Kenny White. Join us starting Friday March 3 on our NPR Music affiliates.

Joined by the Mountain Stage Band, singer, songwriter and producer Maia Sharp has our Mountain Stage Song of the Week, “Whatever We Are,” a lament that appears originally on her recent album “Mercy Rising.”

Joining Sharp on backing vocals are Mountain Stage host Kathy Mattea and Rissi Palmer, who we’ll also hear on this week’s show.

Elsewhere we are treated to a set from southern soul singer and songwriter Rissi Palmer. We’ll hear from some of the finest songwriters to ever grace the Mountain Stage, the incomparable and witty Cheryl Wheeler, the poignant pianist, and producer Kenny White, plus sets from Lexington Kentucky-based modern soul outfit Joslyn & The Sweet Compression.
