Ex-WVU, NBA Star Jerry West to Visit University

Former West Virginia and NBA star Jerry West will be at West Virginia University next week as the school dedicates a collection of his personal memorabilia.

West will be at a book signing from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the WVU Visitors Center.

On Monday, the university says the West Virginia Day Forum and Jerry West Collection Dedication will begin at 10 a.m. in the Milano Reading Room with the exhibit opening immediately afterward. The exhibit includes artifacts from West’s personal collection, including his NBA championship ring, trophies and uniforms.

A Jerry West website will also be launched, featuring clips from oral history interviews with West’s NBA peers through the years, including Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal.

Huggins Among Coaches Examining NCAA Tournament Selection

Kentucky’s John Calipari and West Virginia’s Bob Huggins are among more than a dozen coaches and administrators who have been chosen to examine the NCAA men’s basketball tournament selection system.

The National Association of Basketball Coaches announced the ad hoc committee Monday. It will work with the NCAA in the coming weeks to discuss selection, seeding and bracketing processes.

Previous NABC committees have worked with the NCAA to adjust rules for student-athletes declaring for the NBA draft and to consider the demands placed on athletes’ time.

NABC executive director Jim Haney and former SEC commissioner Mike Slive will co-chair the committee, which also includes coaches such as Mark Few, Steve Fisher and Mark Turgeon, administrators Doug Elgin and Dan Guerrero and consultants Dan Davitt and Reggie Minton, among others.

Mountaineers Ready for First Round Game Friday

As the NCAA basketball tournament tipped off this afternoon  the West Virginia University Mountaineers are preparing for their first-round game on Friday night in Brooklyn.

The third-seeded Mountaineers will take on 14th seed Stephen F. Austin on the second day of the NCAA Tournament. It’s the Mountaineers’ 27th appearance in the NCAA Tournament dating back to 1955. The Mountaineers capped Big 12 play with second place finishes both in the regular season and the conference tournament. The Mountaineers are making their 11th NCAA Tournament appearance in the past 12 years, with a final four appearance in 2005. It’s the first time WVU will take on Stephen F. Austin. Senior Guard Jaysean Paige is excited about the opportunity to play in his home state of New York.

“First off I’m happy about that, I get to play in front of my family and friends and we’re a 3 seed and we worked hard for it and we made it to the tournament so that’s a big accomplishment,” Paige said.

If the Mountaineers make it past the first round, they will take on the winner of the Notre Dame-Michigan game. The WVU women’s basketball team also begins its NCAA tournament journey Friday at noon against Princeton.

WVU Expanding Beer Sales at Basketball Arena

West Virginia University will expand offering beer sales to the general public at home basketball games next season.

Athletic director Shane Lyons announced the move Thursday during a news conference where he detailed a $15 million construction project at the WVU Coliseum.

The project’s first phase includes constructing more concession stands and food and drink options, more than doubling the number of restrooms and widening the concourse. A second phase will add additional arena seating for disabled people.

WVU began selling beer for club-level patrons in the Coliseum in 2012 and at football games in 2011.

A separate project announced Thursday includes a 12,000-square-foot strength and conditioning center for Olympic-sport athletes, a resurfacing of the indoor track and practice areas benefiting the golf and rowing teams.

State Senator Wants to Mandate WVU-Marshall Series

A state senator wants to force the men’s basketball teams from Marshall and West Virginia to play each other every year.

Cabell County Democratic Sen. Mike Woelfel says he plans to introduce a bill requiring WVU and Marshall to meet once each season if school administrators can’t first reach an agreement.

Marshall and WVU have met every year since 1978, including in Charleston since 1992. WVU has won five straight meetings and nine of the last 10, including an 86-68 win last month.

Woelfel noted that he’s both a Marshall alumnus and a graduate of WVU’s law school.

Mountaineers and Herd Meet in Annual Classic

The annual Capital Classic battle between WVU and Marshall in basketball tips off tonight at 7 at the Charleston Civic Arena.

The Mountaineers enter the contest with just one blemish on their record — a loss to the University of Virginia. They sit at 8-1 on the season and are ranked 20th in this week’s Associated Press poll.

Marshall has won its last three contests after starting the season 0-6 and now sits at 3-6 on the young season. In the last three games, the Herd has knocked off Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky and North Carolina Central.

The game will feature 10 West Virginia natives between the two teams. The Mountaineers have four state players on their squad and the Herd features six from the state. The game will be the second for the Mountaineers at the Charleston Civic Center this year. They beat James Madison on Nov. 16 in the Civic Center.

Tonight’s game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
