TV Special Showcases 30 Years of Mountain Stage

Three decades of weekly musical performances adds up to a lot of memories. Join West Virginia Public Broadcasting as it celebrates some of those memories this Sunday at 9 p.m. on WV PBS with the debut of Mountain Stage: A 30 Year Celebration.

“Although primarily a radio show, we’ve had cameras at many of our performances over the years,” noted Larry Groce, artistic director and host of Mountain Stage. “This special pulls together great performances from Joan Baez, Rosanne Cash, Arlo Guthrie, Robert Cray and Del McCoury, just to name a few. I’m inviting you to tune in and enjoy the tribute.”

For over 31 years Mountain Stage w/ Larry Groce has given listeners the best seat in the house for exciting live performances from some of music’s best-known artists. At many shows, TV cameras captured these performances and the result is a Mountain Stage retrospective featuring rare performances from Rhonda Vincent (2001), Martina McBride (2006), Lake Street Dive (2014), and 13 others.

The program was produced by WV Public Broadcasting’s Pat Sergent who worked with Groce to curate a list of 500 songs down to 16 that exhibit the show’s stylistic diversity and intimacy. “It wasn’t easy to narrow down that list!” said Groce.  “We hope we met our goal of presenting a wide range of music while showcasing some of the best known artists we’ve had the privilege of working with over the years.”

Groce added that support from its audience is part of what has kept Mountain Stage going for so long. “Mountain Stage wouldn’t have been possible without the support of listeners and viewers who choose to contribute each and every year. Mountain Stage is their show too.”

On Sunday, viewers will see 16 different performances, dating as far back as 2001and as recent as 2014:

  • Lake Street Dive
  • Joan Baez
  • Rosanne Cash
  • Darrell Scott
  • Martina McBride

Suddenlink Cable Subscribers in Charleston Get Improved WV PBS Service

Charleston, W.Va. — March 27, 2014 — West Virginia Public Broadcasting made significant improvements to how Suddenlink Cable subscribers in Charleston will receive the WV PBS signal.

Until this past week, Suddenlink picked up West Virginia PBS programming “off-air,” meaning the cable company used a receiver and antenna to deliver the signal to customers. This type of delivery is fragile and prone to signal interruptions, causing outages and pixelation.

To alleviate this problem, West Virginia Public Broadcasting engineers designed and installed a direct feed from the station’s headquarters in Charleston to the Suddenlink facility. In addition, there are now two backup delivery options in place that will automatically kick in should the primary signal feed fail.

“Our testing of failure modes demonstrates a slight pause of approximately one second during a switch,” said Scott Finn, executive director of West Virginia Public Broadcasting. “Many viewers will not even be aware of it occurring. This is in contrast to outages of many minutes or hours of glitching and audio static bursts.

“We invite our Suddenlink cable viewers who have tuned away because of these problems to try again and, please, provide your feedback,” Finn said.

WV PBS Remembers Celtic Thunder's George Donaldson This Saturday

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofz-v7FdzE8

Fans of Celtic Thunder can enjoy one of the group’s concerts this Saturday as they remember the principal singer, George Donaldson, who died unexpectedly this week. Tune in to West Virginia PBS Saturday at 8 p.m. for the Heritage concert which was taped in Poughkeepsie, NY, in front of a live audience in 2010.

Heritage focuses entirely on Celtic Thunder’s Celtic and Irish roots, featuring traditional standards such as “Whiskey in the Jar,” “Black is the Color,” “Skye Boat Song” and “Red, Red Rose” as well as a few beautiful love songs such as, “The Dutchman”, “Noreen” and “Just a Song at Twilight.”

The video performance above by George Donaldson “The Old Man” is from Celtic Thunder’s debut concert The Show in 2008.

Donaldson, 46, died at his home in Glasgow on Wednesday due to a massive heart attack. He was a self-taught musician, accomplished on both guitar and flute, with a lifelong passion for Celtic music inspired by his late father Bernard. Donaldson joined Celtic Thunder in 2007 and was known affectionately as the “steadfast” one. He had the distinction of being the sole Scotsman in the show, as well as the only married family man of the group. He appeared in all nine Celtic Thunder concert specials and on all of the show’s CDs and DVDs released to date, the most recent being last year’s “Mythology.”

Celtic Thunder fans may leave condolence messages for fellow group members and Donaldon’s family here – http://bit.ly/O7zfbk.
