W.Va. Schools Recognized By U.S. Department Of Education

C.W. Shipley Elementary School in Jefferson County, Evans Elementary School in Jackson County and Culloden Elementary School in Cabell County were three of the 300 schools recognized as Blue Ribbon Schools nationwide.

Three West Virginia schools have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education.

C.W. Shipley Elementary School in Jefferson County, Evans Elementary School in Jackson County and Culloden Elementary School in Cabell County were three of the 300 schools recognized nationwide.

They join a group of 9,000 schools distinguished since the program was created in 1982.

The honors are given out based either on a school’s high-performing academics or by closing specific achievement gaps. All three West Virginia schools were recognized on the basis of their academics.

The program’s website says these schools have some of the “highest achieving students (the top 15 percent) in English and mathematics, measured by state assessments.”

The announcement was made by Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, who also visited WVU Wednesday to discuss mental health issues with students.

Cardona said in a statement that the schools recognized had gone “above and beyond to keep students healthy and safe” while the nation recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic while “meeting their academic, social, emotional and mental health needs.”

Three West Virginia Schools Named Blue Ribbon Schools For 2021

Elementary schools in Beckley, Nitro and Parkersburg have received recognition as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2021.

The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Achievement gaps in education refer to the disparity in academic performance between groups of students. The achievement gap shows up in grades, standardized-test scores, course selection, dropout rates, and college-completion rates, among other success measures.

A total of 325 schools nationwide received the award this year.

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona made the announcement Tuesday. The West Virginia schools named as National Blue Ribbon Schools were:

Beckley – Crescent Elementary School, Raleigh County School District.

Nitro – Rock Branch Elementary School, Putnam County Schools.

Parkersburg – Criss Elementary School, Wood County Schools.

“This year’s cohort of honorees demonstrates what is possible when committed educators and school leaders create vibrant, welcoming, and affirming school cultures where rich teaching and learning can flourish,” said Cardona. “I commend all our Blue Ribbon honorees for working to keep students healthy and safe while meeting their academic, social, emotional, and mental health needs. In the face of unprecedented circumstances, you found creative ways to engage, care for, protect, and teach our children. Blue Ribbon Schools have so much to offer and can serve as a model for other schools and communities so that we can truly build back better.”

In its 39th year, 9,000 schools have received approximately 10,000 awards from the program.

The program recognizes schools in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, subgroup student scores and graduation rates.

Exemplary High-Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.

Exemplary Achievement Gap-Closing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s student groups and all students.

Three West Virginia Schools Earn National Recognition

The U.S. Department of Education has named three schools in West Virginia as 2017 National Blue Ribbon Schools.

The department announced the awards Thursday for 342 schools nationwide.

The West Virginia schools are Colliers Primary School in Brooke County, Flemington Elementary School in Taylor County and Slanesville Elementary School in Hampshire County.

The program that began in 1982 recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools that are either high performing or have raised student achievement to high levels.

The schools will be acknowledged at a ceremony in November in Washington, D.C.

Two W.Va. Schools Win National Recognition

The U.S. Department of Education has named two schools in West Virginia as 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools.

The department announced the awards Tuesday for 335 schools nationwide.

The West Virignia schools are Evans Elementary School in Jackson County and Gihon Elementary School in Parkersburg.

The program that began in 1982 recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools that are either high performing or have raised student achievement to high levels.

The schools will be acknowledged at a ceremony in November in Washington, D.C.

The West Virginia schools are C.W. Shipley Elementary in Jefferson County and Woodsdale Elementary in Ohio County.

The schools will be acknowledged at a ceremony in November in Washington, D.C.
