'Take Me Home, Country Roads': Russell Moore Has The Mountain Stage Song Of The Week

One of the most awarded groups in bluegrass history sings one of the Mountain State’s most beloved anthems on this week’s encore episode originally recorded in February of 2020.

While some presume that John Denver’s iconic song “Take Me Home, Country Roads” has been performed on Mountain Stage many times over the years, it has only made a scant few appearances in our playlists. Here’s the highly decorated bluegrass group Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, who closed out their set by honoring an audience request for the classic tune.

Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams Have the Mountain Stage Song of the Week

After being a part of the band for legendary drummer and singer Levon Helm- and frequently guesting with heavyweights like Phil Lesh, Little Feat, and Hot Tuna’s Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady- multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter Larry Campbell and singer-guitarist Teresa Williams make their most beautiful music together. The duo appears on Mountain Stage for the second time during this week’s broadcast, recorded in October of 2019 in Charleston, W.Va.

Together, Larry and Teresa have released two exceptional albums, including their most recent Contraband Love. Our Song of the Week is the pair’s rousing version of the gospel blues tune “Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning,” which is featured on their debut, self-titled album.

Larry and Teresa recently launched “It Was The Music”, a film in 10 episodes chronicling the lives and love of Larry Campbell and Teresa Willams, directed by award-winning filmmaker Mark Moskowitz. The all-star cast includes Jackson Browne, Emmylou Harris, Rosanne Cash, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Lucinda Williams and many more. Watch the trailer here and find out where you can see the film, available on multiple platforms, at this link.

Hear the entire set from Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams, as well as energetic performances from Robert Randolph & The Family Band, songwriter Hayes Carll, singer-songwriter and new author Allison Moorer, and Ireland’s Mick Flannery, on this week’s episode of Mountain Stage with guest host Kathy Mattea.

Listen: Shawn Colvin has our Mountain Stage Song of the Week

Renowned singer-songwriter Shawn Colvin marked the 30th anniversary of her landmark album Steady On with acoustic treatments of the songs when she joined us last September. This week’s episode of “Mountain Stage,” with guest host Kathy Mattea, features an acoustic performance by Grammy-winning singer songwriter and recording artist Shawn Colvin, commemorating three decades since her 1989 landmark debut album Steady On. It was awarded Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1990, and in 2019 Colvin released Steady On (30th Anniversary Acoustic Edition).

Our Song of the Week, “Shotgun Down the Avalanche,” is one of several songs from Steady On that was written by Colvin and the album’s co-producer, John Levanthal.

Listen: Steve Earle & the Dukes on Mountain Stage

Our Song of the Week comes from the Hardcore Troubadour himself, Steve Earle.

Steve Earle is widely considered to be one of the greatest living songwriters, so it’s a testament to the prowess of the late Guy Clark that Earle pays tribute to the Texas songwriting legend on his latest collection of Clark-penned songs, “Guy.”

In his seventh appearance on Mountain Stage since 1996, Steve Earle & the Dukes perform a set of songs from “Guy,” including our Song of the Week, “Dublin Blues.”

If you watched “There’s A Stream” recently, you heard some new songs from Earle from his album The Ghosts of West Virginia. We had hoped to record a new session with him earlier this year, but we look forward to welcoming him back to Almost Heaven with those songs next Summer.

Revisit “There’s a Stream” on Facebook, YouTube or LiveSessions.NPR.org.

You can hear the entire set from Steve Earle & the Dukes, plus more live performances from Damien Jurdado, Erika Wennerstrom, Alsarah & the Nubatones and Vanessa Peters, on this week’s broadcast of Mountain Stage with guest host Kathy Mattea.
