Mountain Stage News: March Live Show Announced

Mountain Stage w/ Larry Groce has announced two live shows for March in Charleston. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 day of show, available today on MountainStage.org, by phone at 877-987-6487, locally at Taylor Books in downtown Charleston and also at the upcoming live shows.

On Sunday, March 13, Mountain Stage will record episode #865 at the Culture Center Theater on the State Capitol Grounds, 1900 Kanawaha Blvd., Charleston. The show (which will be heard on over 150 NPR Stations nationwide in April) will include the return of Red Baraat, a Brooklyn-based funk outfit whom NPR Music has crowned “the best party band in years.” Get a taste of their groove with the band’s recent KEXP performance out of Seattle.

The March 13 show will also mark the Mountain Stage debuts of NPR’s favorite “Irish Punch Brothers” We Banjo 3, energetic folk-poppers Star & Micey and Minnesota jazz-blues band Davina and The Vagabonds, whose sassy, soulful sound will bring any Lake Street Dive or Alabama Shakes fan to their feet.

On Sunday, March 20, Mountain Stage will return to its home at the Culture Center Theater to record episode #866. The show will mark the eighth appearance for indie-minded roots rockers Bottle Rockets, who released their twelfth studio release South Broadway Athletic Club this past October. Joining them on March 20 are Cali alt-folk rockers HONEYHONEY, legendary tunesmith Marshall Crenshaw and the Drive-By Truckers’ co-founder Mike Cooley.

Blitzen Trapper, Guster Announced for Mountain Stage

The 33rd season of Mountain Stage will begin on Sunday January 17 at the WVU Creative Arts Center in Morgantown, WV. As guests of WVU Arts & Entertainment, host Larry Groce will welcome indie rockers Blitzen Trapper, Nashville based singer Ruby Amanfu and Austin-based seven piece Wild Child. The show returns to its home base, The Culture Center Theater on the State Capitol Grounds, on Sunday January 24 to welcome back beloved pop-rockers Guster for the second time. The band’s latest album “Evermotion” was produced by Shins keyboardist/Black Keys bassist Richard Swift, who has also produced recordings with Foxygen and Damien Jurardo. Also scheduled to appear are The Westies, a group formed by Michael McDermott and Heather Horton, whose album “West Side Stories,” is a concept record about the real life Westies, “a ruthless gang of Irish mob punks that ruled Hell’s Kitchen in the 60’s and 70′s”.

Television Premiere: "Traveling the Mountain Music Trail"

West Virginia Public Broadcasting is proud to announce the premiere broadcast of “Traveling the Mountain Music Trail,” a 30 minute travelogue guiding viewers through the five-county region of eastern West Virginia that makes up the “Mountain Music Trail.”

Watch “Traveling the Mountain Music Trail” on Sunday, April 3 at 7p.m. and again on Friday, April 15 at 10:30p.m.

The culmination of a year-long collaboration with “Wild, Wonderful West Virginia” and producers from WVPB and “Mountain Stage,” the project also includes an interactive digital map that showcases vignettes, musicians, venues and other points of interest specific to Monroe, Greenbrier, Pocahontas, Randolph and Tucker counties.

“We are thrilled to come together with Mountain Stage and local partners to showcase the Mountain Music Trail,” Commissioner of Tourism Amy Shuler Goodwin said. “Music is a significant part of West Virginia’s cultural identity and this program will encourage folks to not only explore the Mountain Music Trail, but other destinations along Route 219 as well.”

The Mountain Music Trail consists of venues throughout five counties in eastern West Virginia that came together to promote and present the traditional music, dance, and folkways of the Allegheny Mountain region. Several months ago, the West Virginia Public Broadcasting production team took to the road to capture the essence of the trail which runs through Tucker, Randolph, Pocahontas, Greenbrier and Monroe counties as part of a partnership between Wild, Wonderful West Virginia and Mountain Stage, a production of West Virginia Public Broadcasting to promote the Mountain Music Trail.

Elizabeth Cook Postpones Scheduled Mountain Stage Appearance

As announced Monday on her Facebook page, country singer and Sirius XM Outlaw Country’s “Apron Strings” host Elizabeth Cook has canceled a string of upcoming performances and will not appear as scheduled on Mountain Stage Sunday, October 19. We will reschedule her appearance as soon as possible.

We’d like to wish Elizabeth the best while she gets some much needed rest and we look forward to the chance to work with her again in the future.

Tickets to the October 19 show are still available. Performers include Todd Snider, legendary songwriter Chip Taylor, The Secret Sisters and renowned producer and recording artist Ethan Johns.

Mountain Stage Announces Two More Live Shows

“Mountain Stag w/ Larry Groce” has announced two more live performances scheduled before the end of 2014. Tickets for both events will be for sale Friday, October 3 at 8am, and will be made available at Taylor Books in downtown Charleston, by phone at 800.594.TIXX(8499), online via MountainStage.org and also at the upcoming live shows starting October 5.

On Sunday, November 23 the show welcomes a rescheduled performance by soul revivalists St. Paul and the Broken Bones, who were recently nominated for “Emerging Artist of the Year” at the 2014 Americana Music Awards, where they also performed. Joining them on November 23 will be New York based jazz vocalist and frequent Mountain Stage guest Catherine Russell and Ohio based singer, songwriter and visual artist Marti Jones. Two more guests will be added to the line-up in coming weeks.

On Sunday, December 7 the show will celebrate its 31^st Birthday with some recognizable names and a few new favorites. Making her first appearance on Mountain Stage since 2004, singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb has successfully parlayed her talents into a multi-dimensional career encompassing music, film, television, voice-over work and children’s recordings. Her latest CD, “No Fairy Tale” features her trademark wit and lyrical reflection, like on the retrospective tune “The ‘90s.” Also appearing on December 7 will be adventurous roots-rockers Black Prairie; featuring members of the Decemberists and vocalist Annalisa Tornfelt, and modern-day string band The Stray Birds. Both groups will be performing material from their newest releases, “Fortune” and “Best Medicine,” respectively.

Both shows will be at the Culture Center Theater on the state capital grounds. Doors open at 6:30pm and the show starts at 7pm. All seats are general admission. Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn, Yonder Mountain String Band Added to Mountain Stage Schedule

Exciting things are on tap for our fall schedule of live Mountain Stage events. There are five shows scheduled and we just made some exciting new additions that you can read about below.

We’ve added the “first family of banjo,” Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn, to our October 26 live recording at the Culture Center Theater on the capitol grounds here in Charleston. Tickets are available online, at Taylor Books or by calling 800.594.TIXX(8499). Here’s a recent write-up from Rolling Stone Country.

This event will be a part of FestivALL FALL, which runs October 24-26.

Also scheduled to appear on October 26 are Australian pop sensation Kate Miller-Heidke, power-house blues vocalist Janiva Magness and Irish duo Storyman, who have appeared twice on Mountain Stage as Guggenheim Grotto.

October 5 is SOLD OUT! We are excited to welcome Puss N Boots, a country-tinged trio featuring Sasha Dobson, Norah Jones and Catherine Popper, to our show in support of their debut album, “No Fools, No Fun,” which is out now. As you might guess, advance tickets sold out VERY quickly. We also sold the remainder of our “Fall Access Ticket Packs,” which included a ticket to each of the five shows.

Any available tickets will be put on sale on show day, starting at 5p.m., for $25 at the Culture Center Theater. Also appearing October 5 are Blake Mills, The Duhks, Jill Barber and Curtis McMurtry.

The Devil Makes Three, who opened shows recently for Alison Krauss & Willie Nelson, are appearing on Mountain Stage in Charleston Sunday November 2.

Also just announced- Sunday November 2 we welcome Yonder Mountain String Band and The Devil Makes Three, alongside peerless songwriter James McMurtry and emerging duo Lily & Madeleine. We expect tickets for this one to go fast also, so get them now while you still can.
