Travel complications led to a last-minute collaboration between guitarist Charlie Hunter and vocalist Lucy Woodward. The chemistry was so evident that the pair decided to do an album together, released in 2019, called “Music! Music! Music!“
Hunter and Woodward set out to record songs from a broad but “very specific time frame,” Woodward says “1894 to 1987.” Our Song of the Week, “Be My Husband,” is an Andy Stroud composition most usually associated with Nina Simone. Percussionist Keita Ogaura rounds out the trio heard here.
On Sunday, January 14 Larry Groce will welcome back John Oates to Mountain Stage as the show travels to Morgantown, WV to kick-off its historic 35th season of live performance radio. A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame duo Hall and Oates, John Oates has been releasing solo material since 1999. In April 2017 he released his memoir “Change of Seasons.”
Now Oates is prepping for the release of “Arkansas” his latest album of roots and Americana music, due in early-2018. Originally inspired by the music and legacy of the legendary Mississippi John Hurt, the project grew to encompass other artists and styles that represent the dawn of American popular music. Oates crafted a number of original songs for the Arkansas album; selections actually inspired by the process of digging deep into the sonic soil of authentic roots music. “Arkansas” is available for pre-order now.
Oates will be joined by The Good Road Band when he appears January 14, along with already announced guests Tyminski, the latest modern country-effort from Dan Tyminski, Nashville based songwriter Lilly Hiatt, whose latest “Trinity Lane” was produced by Michael Trent of Shovels & Rope, plus a special performance from West Virginia’s beloved storyteller Bil Lepp.

Richie and Rosie have released two albums as a duo, but many musical miles preceded their collaboration.
On Sunday, January 21 Mountain Stage returns to the Culture Center Theater in Charleston to welcome award-winning bluegrass group Dailey & Vincent, plus IBMA Guitar Player of the Year Molly Tuttle, honky-tonk revivalists The Sweetback Sisters, and seasoned Americana group Western Centuries. Just confirmed to appear is the acoustic roots duo Richie and Rosie. Comprised of Rosie Newton-who was touring with The Mammals before she graduated high school- and Richie Stearns-whose endless discography includes three Natalie Merchant records, multiple collaborations with Jim Lauderdale and Donna The Buffalo, and Carrie Rodriguez- recently released their second full-length record, “Nowhere in Time.”

On Sunday January 14 Mountain Stage with Larry Groce, the long running live performance radio program, will kick off its 35th season in Morgantown, WV at the WVU Creative Arts Center. The show will record episode #913 with Tyminski, the latest project from highly regarded bluegrass musician and member of Alison Kraus and Union Station, Dan Tyminski. Tyminski’s new album, “Southern Gothic,” was released in October and is a well-crafted, stylistic departure. As Jewly Hight noted in a recent NPR feature, “[Southern Gothic] orients itself around electro-pop, though it doesn’t stray too far from his bluegrass and Americana roots.”
Of course millions recognize him as the singing voice behind “Man of Constant Sorrow” from the film “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”, and his vocal is the predominant hook in the Avicii song “https://youtu.be/6Cp6mKbRTQY”>Hey Brother.”

Sunday January 21 the show returns to their home venue at the Culture Center Theater to record episode #914 in Charleston, WV. While both its lead members have appeared on Mountain Stage as members of other groups, beloved bluegrass group and RFD TV show hosts Dailey & Vincent will make their first appearance on Mountain Stage January 21. The band’s latest, “Patriots and Poets,” expands upon their previous releases, offering good hard-driving bluegrass alongside polished acoustic country tracks.
Also joining us January 21 will be guitarist, singer and songwriter Molly Tuttle and her band, who have made big waves in the world of bluegrass. Tuttle was recently names “Guitar Player of the Year” by the International Bluegrass Music Association, the first female to ever take top prize in that category. It doesn’t take long to hear why when listening to her latest EP, “Rise.”
Also joining us on January 21 will be Western Centuries, comprised of Seattle-based country musician Cahalen Morrison, jam band veteran Jim Miller (co-founder of Donna the Buffalo), R&B and bluegrass-by-way-of-punk rock songwriter Ethan Lawton, pedal steel player Rusty Blake, and bassist Dan Lowinger. Their debut album, Weight of the World, was produced by Bill Reynolds (Band of Horses). More guests will be announced soon.
