Homes to be Razed Near Yeager Landslide

Demolition is set to begin on several homes acquired by Yeager Airport after a hillside slip last spring.

The airport says in a news release that a contractor is scheduled to begin the work on Tuesday.

Yeager Airport director Terry Sayre says the Kanawha County commission allocated $180,000 to get the demolition started.

A portion of a manmade emergency overrun area at the end of airport’s runway collapsed on March 12. The landslide took out a church and an unoccupied home, power lines and trees, and caused a creek to flood. No one was injured.

Yeager Airport Monitoring Creek Following Additional Slip

Yeager Airport is monitoring a creek partially obstructed by debris from a recent hillside slip.

Airport spokesman Mike Plante says the airport opened its emergency operations Center around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

A portion of a manmade emergency over-run area at the end of airport’s runway collapsed on March 12. Material at the top of the hillside fell last week.

Plante says the hillside’s movement pushed material at the bottom of the slip toward Elk Two-Mile Creek, causing a partial obstruction.

He says engineers and contractors are developing a plan to remove the debris.

Work Begins on Runway Embankment at Yeager Airport

Work has begun on shoring up a runway safety embankment at Charleston’s Yeager Airport.

Heavy rains had caused some slippage on the so-called overrun area in recent days. The Charleston Gazette-Mail reported that the months-long project got under way on Monday.

The manmade hillside is intended to cushion a departing aircraft in the event of an aborted take-off. About half of the structure has been lost to a landslide.

The work includes the removal of crumbling, unstable sections.

S&E Clearing and Hydroseeding of Varney in Mingo County has been awarded a $1.51 million contract to perform the work.

Removal of Slide Area at W.Va. Airport to Start Monday

Work is scheduled to begin Monday on removing part of a manmade hillside at Yeager Airport that collapsed earlier this year.

A Kanawha County judge’s ruling in a lawsuit cleared the way for the work to begin.

Circuit Judge Joanna Tabit ruled on Friday that material collected from the site must be stored in the same place. Tabit also said all parties involved in the lawsuit must be notified before any testing of the material is done.

A portion of the emergency over-run area at the end of the airport’s runway collapsed on March 12. Airport officials are suing companies involved with the over-run area’s design and construction.

Meanwhile, Yeager announced on Saturday that executive director Rick Atkinson will resign, effective Monday.

A detour is in place.

Yeager Airport is activating an emergency siren system designed to protect residents in the area affected by a March 12 mudslide.

Airport officials say activation is set for Thursday afternoon.

The siren is connected to the stream monitoring gauge that was installed on Elk Two Mile Creek two months ago. It will activate automatically when the stream reaches flood stage. The siren will emit a three-minute blast warning residents to evacuate.

A man-made emergency over-run area at the end of the hillside airport’s runway partially collapsed on March 12. The landslide took out a church and an unoccupied home, power lines and trees, and caused the creek to flood. No injuries were reported.
