West Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was unchanged at 5.4 percent in February.

WorkForce West Virginia says the number of unemployed state residents rose by 100 during the month to 42,200. Total unemployment was up 2,200 over the year.

Job gains included 1,100 in trade, transportation and utilities and 1,100 in leisure and hospitality. Mining and logging gained 600 jobs and construction gained 400.

Employment losses included 500 in educational and health services and 100 in financial activities.

Nationally, the unemployment rate remained at 4.1 percent in February.

Unemployment rates dropped in 51 of West Virginia’s 55 counties in October.

WorkForce West Virginia says Jefferson County had the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 3.2 percent, followed by Monongalia County at 3.9 percent, and Berkeley and Hampshire counties each at 4 percent.

Unemployment rates rose in Boone, Calhoun, Pendleton and Pocahontas counties.

Mingo County’s unemployment rate was the highest in the state at 12 percent, down seven-tenths of a percentage point from September.

It was followed by McDowell County at 10.9 percent and Logan County at 10.3 percent.

West Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped four-tenths of a percentage point to 6.9 percent in October.

West Virginia’s unemployment rate edged up slightly in June.

WorkForce West Virginia reported Tuesday that that state’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate increased two-tenths of a percentage point last month for a rate of 7.4 percent. That’s more than 2 full percentage points above the national average of 5.3 percent.

Total nonfarm employment decreased by 4,500 in June, with the service sector accounting for 3,000 of those jobs.

Since last June, total nonfarm payroll employment has decreased by 8,800.
