Pain Clinic Infractions Included Errors and Guns

A report says infractions found at a pain clinic closed by the state included unsecured guns and medication errors.

The Charleston Gazette obtained the state inspection report through a Freedom of Information Act request. The newspaper says the report shows that Hope Clinic’s Charleston facility employed former police officers who routinely carried concealed weapons.

Jolynn Marra, head of the state Office of Health Facility Licensure, tells the newspaper that the guns weren’t secured.

Medication errors included prescriptions given to the wrong patients.

Hope Clinic spokesman George Manahan tells the newspaper that the clinic believes any deficiencies could have been remedied in a short period of time. He says Hope Clinic didn’t challenge the report because the Charleston facility was already winding down operations.

The clinic closed earlier this year.

W.Va. Licensing Agency Orders Two Pain Clinics to Close

Two pain management clinics have been ordered to close after they failed state inspections.

The West Virginia Office of Health Facility Licensure and Certification set a May 15 deadline for Hope Clinic in Raleigh County to close. Punnamma Memorial Rehab Clinic in Wood County must close by May 21.

The agency’s director, Jolynn Marra, tells The Charleston Gazette that both clinics didn’t meet requirements to be licensed.

Three other clinics have been closed since January for failing to comply with a 2012 law aimed at reducing substance abuse. The law codified patient health and safety and gave the Department of Health and Human Resources oversight over pain clinic licensure.

Pain Clinic Reopens after Raid

A southern West Virginia pain clinic under investigation by the federal government has reopened four days after authorities conducted a raid.

Hope Pain Clinic manager Mark Radcliffe says the clinic in Beaver reopened to patients on Monday.

Media outlets report federal and state law enforcement officers removed boxes of files from the clinic on Thursday and turned away patients.

U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin has said the clinic is under investigation but he couldn’t comment further. A U.S. magistrate has sealed search warrants related to the case. No charges have been filed.

Radcliffe says the clinic has cooperated fully with investigators.
