Former West Virginia Delegate Mark Hunt is running for Congress instead of attorney general.

Hunt filed candidacy papers with the secretary of state Monday. In a news release, Hunt says the decision was not an easy one.

The Kanawha County Democratic attorney served in the House of Delegates for 14 years. He previously opened a precandidacy campaign account to run for Republican Attorney General Patrick Morrisey’s job. Morrisey is seeking re-election.

Republican Alex Mooney fills the 2nd Congressional District seat currently. Republicans Ken Reed and Marc Savitt have also opened campaign accounts for the seat.

Charleston Democrat David Higgins is the only other person who has opened a pre-candidacy account for attorney general.

The candidate filing period continues through Jan. 30.
