Blenko Glass Vase Available for West Virginia's Birthday

Blenko Glass is offering a limited-edition vase commemorating West Virginia’s 153rd birthday.

The state Division of Culture and History says in a news release that 153 cobalt blue and topaz vases made at Blenko in Milton are available for $54. They will be unveiled Monday during an all-day state birthday celebration at the Culture Center in Charleston.

In addition, 100 special-edition pitchers made at Blenko are available for $63.

Blenko has been making hand-blown glass products since 1893.

Elizabeth Cook, Qiet Added to July 31 Mountain Stage

Alt-country singer-songwriter Elizabeth Cook and West Virginia-based rockers Qiet have been added to the bill for Mountain Stage’s live production Sunday, July 31 at the Culture Center Theater. As previously announced, the show will also feature  jam-grass favorites Leftover Salmon. Cook is prepared to release “Exodus of Venus” on June 17, and the powerful video for “Slow Pain” premiered recently via Galore. This will make Cook’s 4th appearance on Mountain Stage since 2002.

Beloved gypsy rockers Qiet will make their Mountain Stage debut on July 31, with songs from the recently released crowd-funded project “Kiss The Universe.” They’ve built a dedicated following by blazing their own path throughout our state and the region with their jangly blend of performance art and Appalachian charm.

Earls of Leicester, Lera Lynn & More Return to Mountain Stage July 24th

Jerry Douglas and his Earls of Leicester will return to the Culture Center Theater in Charleston on Sunday, July 24, 2016, for West Virginia Public Broadcasting’s live-performance radio program Mountain Stage with Larry Groce.  Also appearing are Lera Lynn, and the duo of Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley.  

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 day of show, available now, on mountainstage.org, by phone at 877-987-6487, locally at Taylor Books in downtown Charleston and also at Mountain Stage’s upcoming live shows. Day of show, doors open at 6:30pm, with a 7:00pmshowtime.  

Rattle & Roar, the latest album from the Earls of Leicester continues what they started with their self-titled debut album, which is putting a modern spin on the classic Flatt & Scruggs/Foggy Mountain Boys songbook. In 2014 the band won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album.

Lera Lynn returns to Mountain Stage this July.

Perhaps being known best as the dive bar singer in the second season of True Detective, Lera Lynn returns to Mountain Stage with her new album Resistor. The music video for the lead single, “Shape Shifter,” recently debuted on the Wall Street Journal’s blog Speakeasy.

Riding off of a 2016 Grammy Best Bluegrass Album nomination, veteran musicians Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley make their Mountain Stage debut with their forthcoming sophomore album The Country Blues.

This episode of Mountain Stage is scheduled for national distribution via NPR Music later this fall.

West Virginia Holding State Government Career Fair

West Virginia is holding a state government career fair this week.

The state Division of Personnel and WorkForce West Virginia are sponsoring the event Wednesday at the Culture Center in Charleston. It is open to the public.

The event will provide job seekers information on full-time state government employment opportunities and benefits. Nearly 20 state agencies will be represented.

The Department of Administration says in a news release that officials will be searching in particular to fill critical need fields, including nurses, physicians, social services, engineering, corrections and law enforcement, natural resources, environmental protection, human resources, and information technology.

In addition, information will be given to college students interested in the Governor’s Internship Program.

Culture Center Evacuated After Gas Line Struck

The Culture Center on the West Virginia Capitol Complex has been evacuated after construction crews struck a high pressure gas line. 

Metro 911 dispatchers say the leak was reported at 11:51 a.m. and the gas company is on site. Dispatchers also report that the leak occurred on the Capitol Complex across from the Exxon gas station at the corner Washington and Greenbrier Streets. The leak has been stopped and it is currently being monitored by the gas company.  

Greenbrier Street is closed from Washington Street East down to Kanawha Boulevard, including Virginia and Quarrier Streets and Franklin Avenue. 

Man Admits Accessing Porn on W.Va. Culture Center Computer

A Bluefield man has pleaded guilty to charges that he used a public computer at the West Virginia Culture Center to access child pornography.

WCHS-TV reports 21-year-old Matthew Newsome entered the plea Friday in Kanawha County Circuit Court.

Newsome was charged with accessing child porn on the Internet from a public computer terminal at the Culture Center library on Feb. 12. State cyber-security analysts alerted Capitol Police after detecting the activity. Newsome was arrested in April.

Newsome also pleaded guilty to malicious wounding stemming from a robbery at a Charleston motel last December.
