West Virginia Among Top 3 States To Add Clean Energy Jobs In 2022

West Virginia added 7,000 clean energy jobs last year, while California added 13,000 and Texas added 5,000.

What does West Virginia have in common with Texas and California? The three states added more clean energy jobs last year than any others, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

West Virginia added 7,000 clean energy jobs last year, while California added 13,000 and Texas added 5,000. That’s a 19 percent increase in the Mountain State.

West Virginia remains the nation’s second-biggest coal producer after Wyoming. Yet in 2021, the most recent year statistics are available, there were fewer than 12,000 coal mining jobs statewide.

Companies like Nucor, Berkshire Hathaway Energy and Form Energy have brought new facilities to West Virginia and new clean energy jobs.

The nationwide growth in renewable power, especially wind, solar and battery storage, could bring even more clean energy jobs to the state.

Justice, U.S. Lawmakers Break Ground On Berkshire Hathaway Project

The project will be built on the site of the former Century Aluminum plant. Precision Castparts will build titanium parts for the aerospace industry and employ about 200 workers.

State leaders broke ground on Saturday for an economic development project in Jackson County.

Gov. Jim Justice, U.S. Sens. Joe Manchin, D-WV, and Shelley Moore Capito, R-WV, Rep. Carol Miller, R-WV, and other dignitaries came to Ravenswood to break ground on an aerospace manufacturing hub.

The project will be built on the site of the former Century Aluminum plant. Precision Castparts will build titanium parts for the aerospace industry and employ about 200 workers.

It will also be powered by a renewable energy microgrid built by Berkshire Hathaway Energy.

Our Next Energy, or ONE, will build utility-scale lithium storage batteries and employ another 100 workers. That operation is scheduled to begin in 2025.

The total investment in the Ravenswood site is more than $500 million.

Last month, Justice signed a bill that will bring a Form Energy long-duration storage battery plant to the site of a former steel plant in Weirton.

Former Century Aluminum Site To Get New Life, Manufacturing Jobs

Berkshire Hathaway Energy will bring manufacturing jobs back to 2,000 acres in Ravenswood where hundreds once worked.

The site chosen for the new aerospace manufacturing hub in Jackson County is part of West Virginia’s industrial past.

Berkshire Hathaway Energy will bring manufacturing jobs back to 2,000 acres in Ravenswood where hundreds once worked.

It’s the former site of Century Aluminum. The plant opened in 1957 and closed during the Great Recession in 2009.

State officials attempted to reopen the plant, but that fell through when the company told them the price of electricity was too high.

A New Jersey company got a $15 million loan from the West Virginia Economic Development Authority to redevelop the site.

When that company defaulted on its loan, the state took over the property and finished cleaning it up. The future aerospace plant will be powered with 100 percent renewable energy.

$500 Million Solar Energy Powered Aerospace Plant Coming To Jackson County

Gov. Jim Justice announced that Berkshire Hathaway Energy is investing $500 million and purchasing more than 2,000 acres of state-owned land in Ravenswood, West Virginia. They will develop a first of its kind, renewable energy microgrid powered industrial hub.

Gov. Jim Justice announced that Berkshire Hathaway Energy is investing $500 million and purchasing more than 2,000 acres of state-owned land in Ravenswood, West Virginia. They will develop a first of its kind, renewable energy microgrid powered industrial hub. The energy will come from solar power.

The first announced business on the site is the Precision Castparts Corporation, a Berkshire Hathaway incorporated business. The company will develop a facility that will use 100 percent renewable energy to manufacture titanium products for aerospace and other industries.

“This project demonstrates how investing in clean energy can revive economies that have served our country’s energy needs for decades,” said BHE Renewables President and CEO Alicia Knapp. “We are thrilled to partner with PCC and West Virginia to deliver this landmark renewable energy solution, hundreds of jobs and significant economic development.”

PCC Metals President Steve Wright added, “Our future facility is an outstanding opportunity to use clean energy as we invest in further strengthening our position as a world leader in titanium metals. Manufacturing our products with 100% renewable energy benefits PCC and our customers as we strive to minimize the impact of our operations and wisely use natural resources.”

Justice said the Ravenswood project will serve as the foundation for additional pivotal investments in West Virginia.

“This is a monumental announcement that will pay dividends for generations to come. The partnership we are forging with BHE Renewables and PCC is testament to West Virginia’s ability to compete on the world stage and recruit world-class companies like these to our state,” Justice said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the fact that West Virginia will help lead the way into a new era of renewable energy microgrid-powered manufacturing. I can never thank BHE Renewables and PCC enough for their commitment to West Virginia and for the jobs and economic ripple effects this partnership will bring.”

The announcement comes one day after the legislature passed a bill that creates a certified industrial business expansion development program to recruit and develop renewable energy industries.

The Jackson County site, former home of the Century Aluminum plant, is one of two green industrial sites included in the new law. The second site is yet to be determined.

Berkshire Hathaway Worker Picks Enough Games to Win $100,000

An employee at one of Berkshire Hathaway’s latest big acquisitions won $100,000 by correctly picking the winners of the first 29 games of the NCAA basketball tournament’s opening rounds.

Warren Buffett’s company said Monday that a welder for Precision Castparts, Dwayne Johnson, won the contest that was open to Berkshire’s more than 350,000 employees.

The 36-year-old winner who lives in West Virginia came just short of qualifying for a $1 million prize if he had picked all 32 games of the opening weekend correctly.

Buffett plans to continue the contest, and he expects there will be million-dollar winners occasionally.

There were 96,108 entrants in the contest this year.

Berkshire owns more than 90 companies, including Geico insurance, BNSF railroad, See’s Candy and Fruit of the Loom.
